Sri Lanka is grappling with a rising trend of tobacco addiction among schoolchildren, highlighting the urgent need to address this growing issue to protect the well-being of the country's future leaders.

Consultant Psychiatrist Dr. Rumi Ruben, speaking to Daily Mirror, expressed concern over the increasing incidence of schoolchildren using tobacco products.

He stated that it is the responsibility of parents, teachers and tutors to closely monitor and address this issue.

Dr. Ruben pointed out that many schoolchildren are becoming addicted to tobacco and e-cigarettes, warning that such habits may pave the way for further addiction to illegal drugs, which could spread among peers.

"Parents should engage in open discussions with their children about the dangers of smoking and the health risks linked to tobacco use," Dr. Ruben stated.

He further explained that when children lack the money to purchase tobacco, they may resort to stealing from their parents to fund their addiction, potentially leading to involvement in illegal activities.

Dr. Ruben also advised parents to closely monitor the behavior of their children, particularly those involved in educational activities, and encourage participation in leisure activities to alleviate stress.

In addition, he stressed that schools and tuition centers should conduct bag checks to protect children from tobacco use.

"Parents must be proactive and involved in their children's lives, paying attention to where they spend their time, who they associate with, and how they manage their finances," he added.

Dr. Ruben also noted that tobacco products have moved beyond being a secret indulgence, with many children now using them in places where they should feel safe and supported, such as classrooms, playgrounds and outdoor learning areas.

Finally, he urged that children addicted to tobacco should seek medical advice without delay.
