Over 100 residents from more than 25 families in Senanayakapura and Samapura have been relocated to safer areas due to the looming threat of a breach in the Gal Oya river bunds, according to the Ampara District Secretary.
“The banks of the Gal Oya River in the Senanayakepura area have suffered significant erosion. Temporary repairs using sandbags are not feasible at this point. While the bund has not breached yet, the risk remains high,” the District Secretary explained.
He further warned that a breach could lead to severe flooding in the Suduwella area, affecting families in both the Senanayakepura and Samapura Grama Niladhari divisions under the Ampara Divisional Secretariat.
