Rs. 25.5 Mn swindled in bogus vehicle sale scheme, trio arrested

Colombo, Dec 21 (Daily Mirror) - The Cinnamon Gardens Police arrested three individuals linked to a fraud amounting to Rs. 25.5 million.

Police said the fraud scheme involved an advertisement in a Sunday newspaper, listing vehicle registration numbers and types for sale at a rented complex within the BMICH. They said two buyers had responded to the ad, intending to purchase a car and a jeep on Wednesday (20).

Upon arrival at the BMICH, the buyers were approached by the office manager and organization head, who insisted on receiving payment before initiating the necessary documentation for the vehicle sales. Accordingly, one buyer handed over Rs. 12.5 million, while the other person had provided Rs. 13 million.

Later, the person who had taken the money had gone into a room inside the premises assuring the delivery of the vehicle keys and documents and had disappeared through a back door.

Responding to the complaint lodged by the duped buyers, the police launched an investigation leading to the arrest of three key suspects, the manager, the assistant manager and the cashier of the company.

The arrested suspects, aged 41, 43 and 65 are residents of Pannipitiya, Maligawatta and Colombo 15.

A travel ban has been imposed on the primary suspect who remains at large, preventing him from leaving the country.

Further inquiries into the incident will be transferred to both the Fraud Investigation Bureau and the Criminal Investigation Department, police said.
