Rs. 260 million pilot boat sparks concern after private excursion accident

Oficials involved in a modern, high-tech pilot boat worth around Rs. 260 million have become concerned after a complaint was filed regarding the loss incurred after it was involved in an accident during a private excursion, the ‘Magen Ratata’ organisation chairman Sanjaya Mahawatte said.

He said this after submitting a complaint to Transport, Highways, Ports and Civil Aviation Minister, Bimal Ratnayake today (15).

Sanjaya Mahawatta said that in order to prevent the investigations from being influenced due to this, he requested that the services of the officers who have been accused, including the Managing Director of the Ports Authority, Ganaka Hemachandra, be temporarily suspended.

It is the responsibility of the current government to prevent the investigation into this incident from being influenced in accordance with the anti-corruption policy, he said.

"It is the responsibility of the government to conduct a fair investigation and implement the law against the officers who misused state property and caused losses amounting to millions of rupees to the government," he said.

After the complaint filed with the Bribery or Corruption Commission regarding this incident, the officers involved in this incident are trying to show that they are using the vessel in question through other means and that there is a risk of endangering the lives of port employees by forcibly employing the vessel in a condition that is unfit for use, he said.

He further said in the complaint that if such an accident occurs, the Chairman and Managing Director of the Ports Authority should bear the responsibility.
