In the wake of the death of Matara robbery’s main suspect, Finance and Media minister Mangala samaraweera said in a twitter message that the rule of law must prevail even when dealing with criminals.
He tweeted that the brutal murder of a Police Constable on duty in Matara cannot be justified by an equally brutal murder of the suspect while in police custody.

Same old script since 1948. Accused taken to hideout to find the stolen then he tries to attack, police shoots the accused in self defense.

If Rule of law prevails for this criminals,1) They commit the crime and go to remand prison.2) They maintain they're criminal activities from the remand prison through mobile phones.3) They come out on bailAnd the cycle will continue.

Its easy for you to tweet when you have full security around you. Sir how about the ordinary law abiding citizens? Our streets are not safe again. Let the police officers bring the situation under control. Please dont discourage them. You cant preach good governance when your head is inside the mouth of underworld monster. First we need to come out of that situation.

The Minister is correct. I have read of so many cases where the person (criminal) under arrest, is taken to locate and identify his weapons or booty and then unexpectedly he takes out a gun or a grenade, so unfortunately the Police have to shoot him!!!! Somehow, this story no longer sounds credible!Remember, 2 murders have now been committed and one of these killings whilst in custody, by the custodians themselves, or so it appears!

Since law enforcement and judicial convictions are tardy in Sri Lanka, the police might have opted to deliver instant justice. After all justice delayed is justice denied.

Sir, there is an unwritten law in this world if anyone killed police officer, Police killed him however immediately or latter. If anyone killed a judge he will be put in jail for long time, if anyone killed Forces ., he will be killed on the spot, if anyone killed politician in power, he will be released by opposition party once come in power.

You are also a root cause of all this. Please get the hell out...

Whether it is yahapalana or yamapalana an eye for an should be the response to these underworld criminals. In the Matara incident police has failed to a certain degree. Police should have knocked off the whole gang without putting them in remand prison to be maintained by poor tax payers money.

Rufus Norton Sunday, 24 June 2018 06:17 PM
It is the same script as narrated under the previous regime. But this should not be so under the so-called 'Yahapalanaya'. Every human being has a right to be dealt with justly under the law whether he be a criminal or otherwise.

Have to accept the minister's comment and act on it because we remember an era in late 80's where armed forces were allowed to take decisions like this and how country suffered. Who can assure they won't do the similar thing to an innocent person... we all know well about the Sri Lankan police....

It is absurd comparing the politicians to these criminals. Our law is very weak. Most of these criminals are confident that they can go Scot free when a politician interferes and have him released on bail. Hence if he is deliberately shot dead whilst in custody, that will be a lesson to other criminals who will know what is store for them if mess around with the Police or other forces. No one should have sympathy toward such criminals.

Sri lanka police has shown to the world that its incapability of handling criminals.Minister who responsible of police department should take stern action against those who violated the international police code. If Sri Lanka is planning to stand shoulder to shoulder with other develop countries in the world for human rights and other global affairs. It should follow

In that case why is it not applied for MR, Gota,Namal. -Thajudeen, Ekneligoda, Rathupaswala, Lasantha , Killings at Welikada and the list goes on. So many unsolved deaths. They can be politicians but they are criminals first and have to be tried. That is why we elected you guys. Yahapalanaya has done sweet nothing but pave the way for MR and Gota to come back into power.

Amusing to read these comments approving the killing without trial criminals, as the police wished. This same verdict was not given when a leopard was kill. It had attacked 4 wildlife officers. Comments were that the civilians who killed the animal should be punished by law. Is our compassion misplaced?

I am so angry and sad about what you have tweeted. What you have told may be true but can it be applied to mindless killers who can kill anyone without remorse. These are the products of Sri Lankan politicians who have created a band of animals who can not be touched by the law. Send them to prison so they can continue their work unhindered. I feel really sorry for this country.
