Colombo, Dec. 14 (Daily Mirror)- The Supreme Court today ordered Acting IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon and three other police officers to pay a compensation of Rs. 2 million out of their personal funds to an individual for violating his fundamental rights, while being detained at the Mirihana Police Station.
The Supreme Court held that four police officers, including Acting IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon have violated the fundamental rights of petitioner W. Ranjith Sumangala by his illegal arrest, detention and subjection to torture at the Mirihana Police Station, which was under the supervision of Deshabandu Tennakoon in 2011.
A private party, Ajith Wanasundera (a retired Sergeant Major of the Army) who was involved in the matter was also held liable and required to pay compensation.
The State was directed to pay a compensation of Rs.100,000 to the petitioner.
The Supreme Court further directed authorities including National Police Commission to take disciplinary action against all police officers including Deshabandu Tennakoon.
Senior Counsel Viran Corea with counsel Sarita De Fonseka and Thilini Vidanagamage appeared for the petitioner while Senior State Counsel Induni Punchihewa appeared for Tennakoon and the Attorney General.
The judgment was delivered by Justice S. Thurairaja with Justices Kumudini Wickremasinghe and Priyantha Fernando agreeing.

In any other developed country this will mean the end of the IGP and a new one should take over. In SL with RR in power they grow two inch thick skin and IGP will be glued to his seat.

If things were fair in this country, it would be the end of the career of the scumbag Tennakoon, who has continually disregarded human rights in recent years and has thus disqualified himself from being a police officer.

Finally, a judgement we expect has come down in this country, even though the compensation could have been higher. In any other decent country, this fellow would have been asked to stand down immediately. But in this wonderland, he is still the acting IGP. Should anything more needs further explanation?

Compensation is not sufficient for torture , all these three policemen should face serious criminal charges Furthermore how come Attorney General appear for policemen accused of torture. It is totally out of order.

Whatsoever acting IGP should comply with the supreme court’s order. In addition national police commission should take the disciplinary action against the IGP sometimes he may be deprived of his present position Thus he will have to pay the retribution

Ranil and T.Alles hv made a bug blunder by appointing D.Tennekoon to the post of acts IGP. They shud hv waiting for the Supreme Court judgement. Now RW n TA should not confirm him as IGP and ask for his resignation. It will be a disgrace to RW and also to the country having unlawful Police force, seriously having an IGP who is reprimanded by the court.

It's highly doubtful whether Ranil W and Rajapakse rule will take any action against Deshabandu as this gang of politicians are that corrupt. But this verdict is a good example of why the people of the country should take a wise decision to end the politics of these corrupt politicians and their henchmen.

Anuradha Sena Friday, 15 December 2023 03:21 PM
The apex judicial body, the SC, recently gave a landmark ruling against the Rajapakse brothers and their henchmen against their economic mismanagement. But Ranil said in parliament that Rajapakses are not responsible for the economic tragedy. What action did RW take about this ruling against Rajapakses? The same will happen for this case too. The election is the only solution for people to change this
