SC suspends decision to deactivate political party



Colombo, October 11 (Daily Mirror) -  The Supreme Court suspended a decision by the Elections Commission  to deactivate the Lanka Janatha Party and allowed the party to contest the General Elections .

The lanka Janatha Party was deactivated and not allowed to contest the general elections by the Elections Commission due to an internal dispute .

The General Secretary of the party , Shalika Perera filing a writ petition challenged the decision . 

He said that the Elections  Commission did not have the authority to de activate a recognized political party .

The Supreme Court bench headed by Acting Chief Justice Murdu Fernando , Justices A.M.D Nawaz and Janak De Silva delivered the  order suspending the decision of the Elections Commission .

Counsel Hafeel Farisz with Shannon Tillekratne and Sanjeewa Kodithuwakku appeared for the Petitioner .

Deputy Solicitor General Yuresha De Silva appeared for the Elections Commission
