SJB divided on constitutional reforms

Colombo, Feb 12 (Daily Mirror) - Divisions within the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) on constitutional reforms was witnessed today when MP Rajitha Senaratne stated that the Executive Presidency should be abolished immidately while the party General Secretary Ranjith Madduma Bandara insisted that a Presidential election should be held first and the reforms should come next.

The divisions were evident when both vocied their opinion at a dicussion organized by the National Movement for Social Justice.

"Why should we have a Presidential election if we are to abolish the presidency?" Dr. Senaratne questioned.

However Madduma Bandara who commented said people's right for franchise should be upheld. Prriority should be given to people's right for franchise," he said.

The party government by SLPP already ousted along with President and PM,therefore the present parliament's validity is only for six months which should be followed by elections and it has no mandate to change constitution or pass any bills. We can challenge this SC.

"Why should we have a Presidential election if we are to abolish the presidency? That is what a person who speaks both sides of the mouth would say. Where was this politico in 2019.2015, 2010, 2000 and 2005. He should have said the same to Chandrika, Mahinda, Sirisena, and Gotabaya.

On the face of it, yes, Exe Presidency should be abolished before the Presidential election which otherwise is going to be a costly affair for people. How long have they been saying this? On the other hand, who can believe Sajith when Sirisena did the same and he never did anything. SL politicians should never ever be trusted and the governance of the country has to be transferred to another country if SL is to be developed.

Executive presidency is the cause of many serious issues in Sri Lanka. All the presidents who promised to abolish it have not done it because of selfish reasons. There is no possibility for any presidential candidate to obtain more than 50 of the casted votes in the next election. If RW is willing to abolish it, better support it and get it abolished once and for all. Let the country have an executive prime minister.
