SL braces for AI powered election malpractices in future

In the wake of AI (Artificial Intelligence) powered election malpractices mushrooming globally, Sri Lanka’s Election Commission is bracing for such possibilities in the future elections here, an official said yesterday.

According to global experience ,AI can accelerate the production and diffusion of disinformation in contributing to organised attempts to
persuade people to vote in a certain way.

AI can magnify the scale of disinformation by thousands of times. Also , hyper-realistic deep fakes of pictures, audio, or video could influence voters powerfully before they can be possibly fact-checked. The risks are compounded by social media platforms.

Asked about Sri Lanka’s preparation , Commission’s Chairman R.M.A.L. Rathnayake said his office is currently in the process of studying how other countries respond to such challenges to the democratic electoral process.

He said the Commission would decide on measures including legislation to curb impacts of such malpractices on elections in the future.

An Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) is an electronic device utilized for recording votes, serving as a modern alternative to traditional ballot papers. EVMs were introduced as a replacement for ballot papers, with their first usage occurring in the No. 70 Parvur assembly constituency in Kerala in 1982. It is regrettable that Sri Lanka has not been able to implement EVMs to automate the election process. For decades, the election system in Sri Lanka has been plagued by criminal violence and manipulation. Regrettably, our leaders have failed to take the necessary steps to automate the process by introducing Electronic Voting Machines. These machines could easily be designed by institutions such as the Dr. Arthur C Clarke Centre or the University of Moratuwa. The political leaders of our country are entrenched in corruption and have shown little interest in automating the process, unlike India, which initiated and implemented this project in the 1980s and 1990s.
