Parliament, Dec. 12 (Daily Mirror) - It has become difficult for Sri Lanka to export timber, especially to Europe as it is perceived that local exporters are supplying stolen timber, Chairman of the Consultative Committee on Environment Ajith Mannapperuma told Parliament today.

"This situation has arisen as Sri Lankan exporters have failed to produce documentary proof that timber that is offered to foreign buyers are from commercial forests," he said.

We do not have large forests to harvest timber. We are a small island than cannot sustain this type of business without creating havoc to our environment system. Therefore, do not involve in businesses that are not valid and sustainable given the nature of the country.

Can the MP point out were the commercial forests are in Sri Lanka.There is no valid sustainable timber harvesting in Sri Lanka. The exporters as a whole are crooks. Thirst for dollars is causing terrible environmental degradation here.

driving along the Manamperi main road I observed a cemented plaque probably planted on govt. surveyed boundary with English words reading FOREST RESERVE TRESPASSERS WILL BE PROSECUTED. it amused me a lo t because with my binoculars I could see a vast unending acreage of land with neatly cut tree stumps probably with electric saws and some local inhabitants commenting that a private saw mill was freely operating and illegal exports are not surprising but WHO CERTIFIES THE ILLEGAL DOCUMENTS. It is as bad as a Minister caught red handed smuggling gold and a variety of other items and brazenly and unashamedly sitting in parliament under parliament priviledges instead of resigning from his post and allowing the law to take its course. The question is are these priviledges applicable outside parliament

Already forests are getting depleted by stooges of politicos. Local construction industry now depends mostly on imported timber. Stop timber exports forthwith and save part of the import costs.
