Sri Lanka has extended an offer to share its expertise in peacekeeping missions and provide training to the Congolese armed forces, in a move aligned with Sri Lanka's defense diplomacy, according to a statement from the Sri Lankan mission in Nairobi.
The proposal was part of discussions held during a meeting between Sri Lankan Ambassador to Kenya, Kana Kananathan, who is concurrently accredited to Congo, and Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi. The meeting, which took place on Friday, signifies the growing relationship between Sri Lanka and Congo.
President Tshisekedi expressed his unwavering support for Sri Lankan business interests seeking to invest in Congo. Ambassador Kananathan had previously introduced Sri Lankan companies to various agencies in Kinshasa, exploring opportunities in sectors such as renewable energy, mining, microfinance, and agriculture.
In response, Ambassador Kananathan conveyed Sri Lanka's commitment to supporting Congo in various ways, emphasizing Sri Lanka's proficiency in peacekeeping missions and extending an offer to assist in training the Congolese armed forces, in line with Sri Lanka’s defense diplomacy.
During the meeting, Ambassador Kananathan formally presented his credentials to President Tshisekedi, marking his official assumption of duties as the First Sri Lankan Ambassador to the Democratic Republic of Congo.
President Tshisekedi expressed his gratitude to Ambassador Kananathan for his instrumental role in strengthening the bonds of friendship and cooperation between Sri Lanka and Congo.
