SL receives USD 890,000 interim compensation for damages by X-Press Pearl

The Treasury has received an interim compensation of USD 890,000 for the damages caused by the ship X-Press Pearl, Minister of Judicial, Prison Affairs and Constitutional Reforms, Dr. Wijayadasa Rajapaksa said.

This amount is intended to cover the costs incurred by the Maritime Environment Protection Authority (MEPA) for the clean-up of the Sri Lankan coastline which was polluted by the fire on the ship.

The compensation was provided by the insurance company of the X-Press Pearl ship.

Meanwhile, the Attorney General's Department has requested compensation for the damages suffered by the fishermen. It is reported that the relevant insurance company is currently considering this request as well. (Sheain Fernandopulle)

The joke was that there was going to be more than $1 to the government. Open your eyes, internationally Sri Lankan only citizens are considered far greater risk compared to comparable nations, like even Bangladesh, Pakistan or India. If a Sri Lankan citizen with dual applied for job with his overseas passport he'd get paid more, but if he applied for middle east job with Lanka passport he'd get paid less. That's the trust of the world has towards Sri Lankan passport holders, and citizens in general.

The real compensation should have been USD 890 billion in first world terms. But our politicians must have negotiated with the insurance company and the their lawyers to get this down to USD 890,000 so that they could get a commission into their overseas bank accounts.

Probably only cost the government $200,000 USD for the clean up. They probably exaggerate the costs of the clean-up inured by the Maritime Environment Protection Authority (MEPA). Why the Insurence company did not check if the billing was accurate is surprising. They should have had local agent watching, to confirm, and audit the MEPA claim to make sure before throwing their money away like they have.
