SLC obtains interim order against Sports Minister with new constitution

The Court of Appeal today issued an interim order preventing the Sports Minister from proceeding with the draft constitution for Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC).

The Court of Appeal made this order pursuant to a writ petition filed by Sri Lanka Cricket challenging the legality of drafting a new constitution with the intervention of the Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe.

President’s Counsel Romesh de Silva with Kuvera De Zoysa PC instructed by Attorney-at-Law Sanjay Fonseka appeared for the SLC. The Court of Appeal two-judge-bench comprised Justices Nissanka Bandula Karunaratne and Chamath Morais.(Lakmal Sooriyagoda)

Regardless of however much anti-corruption measure the courts are supporting for the status quo. They have judges who are party to the bringing legal action to prevent judges paying their due taxes even. Saying Judges are above the tax laws. Now government finds that the courts (or the judges in them) are against government trying to uproot corruption. Government must bring in legislation to constitution for SLC as a monetary bill in someway and the judicery cannot stop it then. SLC once before used the International Criminal Court, ICC to stop government, but Government cannot fail like this forever.
