Colombo, April 25 (Daily Mirror) - In its first move for the formation of a broad political alliance, President Ranil Wickremesinghe had a meeting with Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) stalwart Basil Rajapaksa and representatives of other parties and groups, and decided to accelerate political work in view of the presidential election after May Day.
Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena represented the Mahajana Eksath Peramuna at the meeting. Besides, Ministers Prasanna Ranatunga, Tiran Alles, Harin Fernando, Kanchana Wijesekara, MP Mahindananda Aluthgamage and Anura Priyadarshana Yapa attended the meeting held on Tuesday evening. Chief of Staff of the President Sagala Ratnayake was also present representing the United National Party (UNP).
The SLPP and the UNP led by the President decided to have May Day rallies separately and merge for an alliance along with other likeminded parties in view of the presidential election after that.
The President will come forward as a common candidate this time and contest the election under the symbol of the proposed alliance.
“The President will not contest under the UNP symbol,” a source said.
UNP Chairman Vajira Abeywardane and Minister Alles have been assigned to work out arrangements for the registration of the new alliance under a symbol acceptable to all the parties and groups.
The President is expected to launch the campaign targeting the election after the country secures the third tranche of the IMF (International Monetary Fund) in June, according to the same political source.
In the formation of the new alliance, the political groups led by MPs Wimal Weerawansa, Dulles Alahapperuma and Pivithuru Hela Urumaya (PHU) will also be invited.
At Tuesday’s meeting, it was decided to reach out to these parties and groups that defected from the SLPP .

Hey #Priyanee- it’s people like u voting these morons over the years enriching themselves and hardly doing anything to develop the country. Either you are being supported by them so you hardly feel the sufferings the average citizen is going thru now. Or a keyboard warrior from overseas not knowing the actual situation in SL .

Unless Sajith agrees to step down from contesting, RW is not going to win a majority as our rural and low income earning voters are stupid and naive. They judge a politician by what tangible thing they give. A takaran sheet, a school bus, a smart board, a Rs20,000 salary increase (2015) are the carrots that win votes. RW does not have a reputation for doing such gimmicks so he will lose.

Good to have them altogether in one place. Can save time when arresting them for crimes against the people of Sri Lanka.

What matters more for the country is a 25 year plan and action plans to achieve same rather than the alliance partners. Sadly no voter is demanding for same. The economic advisors of all 3 main candidates - JVP Prof Ajith Jayantha, SJB Prof Rohan Pethiyagoda and UNP (RWs team) are all correctly saying that the country needs a 25 year stable plan of action to which all elected parties at successive elections should adhere to. But none of the parties have so far produced such a plan. Sad to see us voters getting deceived like this. RW will be better remembered in history if he releases such a plan and then lose the election rather than talking of his praiseworthy leadership in the last 2 years (which at the end of the day is also history) We must vote for the future.

Both the SLPP and the UNP know that they have no future contesting individually. Hence the alliance. But the country will watch patiently to see the reaction of the breakaway groups. It also proves that in politics there are no permanent enemies but permanent interests.

Something Fishy With This Merger Thursday, 25 April 2024 04:54 PM
Something fishy is going on! They seem very open and confident with this merger announcement. Hope they won’t use the Tri Forces (which they have been pampering over the years) to ensure they stay in power similarly in Myanmar, most African countries, Etc. Just be ready with an open mind as anything can happen guys.

An unholy alliance! "Merge with other like minded parties". That is ideal! What they mean by this is that parties that are resolute on fraud and corruption with members of each other protecting the rogues of the other party, irrespective of who is in power as is plainly evident today. The silver lining behind this dark cloud is that together or separately they will not be able to go past that elusive 10% mark.

No Hope For SL if they Get Voted In Again Thursday, 25 April 2024 09:18 AM
Excellent, all in one basket. Will be easier for voters to Vote them Out at one go. Most of the politicians in both these parties are responsible for the economic crisis over the years and made worst during Gota’s SLPP days. They have only uplifted certain people during their tenure but majority of the citizens and country is in dire straits. Hope the people will remember all the previous and current difficulties majority are facing due to these politician’s policies. Major corruption and criminal cases are still not solved and they seem less concern with them.

Don’t be surprised if they get “voted” in similarly with countries as Myanmar, North Korea and some African countries. With Tri Force at their disposal and always ensuring their welfare at the expense of the average citizens are taken care of. They are well “oiled” and ready for further instructions.

Greatest news . The voters who supported UNP can easily move away if they think logically. SLPP is the party who bankrupted the country, brought the farmers to their knees, and includes the biggest thieves of Asia. Now it is clear Ranil will do anything to cling on to power even by sitting with rogues. Wake up SL. I do not tell anybody to vote for NPP, but do not vote for thieves and their stooges for the sake of our future generation.

Both SLPP and UNP are dying parties, due to their proven traitorous approach to nation, double crossing unfaithful politics, deceitful election centered promises that leading public to patiently wait to teach them in election, their alliance is not sufficient enough to keep NPP at bay, whether SP like or not, but he will be forced by subordinates to put his weight with them, at least to slow down the powerful move of huge NPP juggernaut

Broad Alliance to rob the country once again. Remember, robbers will always form an alliance because their single goal is to rob. Honest Governing does will not want alliances specifically with representatives with questionable past, infact they will want strictly such elements to be dropped before an alliance.

Doubt if this Union of Humbugs could even reach 10% of votes casted. People must know by now, (after been taken for pure suckers for decades) that "jam tomorrow" promises are for the goats. The first of these elections will establish a monumental change in SL politics and the class structure in having the leaders who truly stem from the long suffering, hardworking, sincere masses. Right now Ranil is a world away from people who struggle to survive each day.

People, enough is enough, lets come in to one decision, which is the NPP should come as a broader alliance, please make sure the Rajapakse alliance should not be in parliment, they should be punished, and must take all their assets, people we should do something different, get them to Galle face, punish them for 30 days, must is a must. finally, i advise all citizens, do not regret this time., we need to change the system.

Even the now emerging fraudulent label with a new name will not save the political cronies of SLPP and UNP, who want to continue the old disastrous policies, from total defeat!!! The two "foxes", Ranil and Basil, are not clever enough to erase the years of painful experiences of the majority of the people with their deceptions and tricks!!! The old corrupt guard of politicians, like their policies, will not escape their political downfall this time, without any real future prospects!!!

Whatever the sambol and paan, be ready to eat parippu. For the people who think RW did wonders to reduce the USD. Reason for the USD rates went down. 1 foreign remittance 2 tourism 3 loan re-payment pending 4 vehicle import stopped 5 tax increase 6 fuel price and electricity price increase 7 imf loan Once the time comes to repayment of loan, then will see the real outcome

In case Ranil wins the Presidential election, his government would have more SLPP Ministers, which means Ranil would have technically sold UNP to SLPP as he would not have contested under the Elephant symbol and would not have appointed a higher number of UNP MPs as Ministers.
