SLPP decides not to support Ranil, but to field its own candidate
Colombo, July 29 (Daily Mirror) - The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), at its Central Committee meeting, decided today not to support President Ranil Wickremesinghe at the Presidential election, but to field its own candidate instead.
The party will decide on its candidate later.

Namal Baby wins! His candidate (DP?) and RW will now vie for the third and fourth places in the race. Ranil can still save face by withdrawing, but I doubt his complacency will permit it. His nearly half-a-century-long political effort seems to be heading only towards the dustbin of history - bad luck. The real fight is going to be between AKD and SP. It would appear that there is a good chance to steer the country in a new direction. I hope the voters will make the correct choice.

RWs chances became even slimmer...but i think in a few years time you will regret voting for SP or AK the same way people regret voting for GR....i am certain that history written in the future will say positive things about RW, and for that i will vote for RW for the first time since i started voting in the late 80s

As for your analysis, You obviously seem blindsided by SP, typically naive to believe he will not go down the same path of tyranny and ineptitude, as his late father, who he idolises almost daily. Either way, it will be a defining moment in SL's political history, let's hope it's for the best not the worse.

Politically a good decision. By around 2030 election they may be able to bounce back if akd or sp lead alliances fails as a government. Pohottuwa had around 6.9m and they had about at least 4m hard pro rajapaksha voters. Now they at least have 2 to 3m minimum. So with that they will be able to become third. Malimawa is heavily loosing the trend they had before and if people like Hadun makes more and more funny and foolish statements they may end up third pushing both SP and pohottuwa up the ladder. The floating voters are the key for npp and anything can happen at the last minute.

Very good decision! Now the right thinking people will understand that Ranil never stooped so low to support a corrupt group who in the past tried vehemently to topple the UNP and Yahapalanaya government. If not for Sirisena, this country would have been in a very strong position under that government. MR supported Ranil only for economic recovery and Ranil silently focused on that without creating a toxic situation by attacking MR and his cronies. No other individual could have done what Ranil did, even though people are throwing brick bats at him daily. We sincerely hope he can carried forward the economic recovery now without being in the shackles of MR and his men.
