Sajith asks President to resign if he cannot uphold SC Order

Parliament, July 26 (Daily Mirror) - Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa today challenged President Ranil Wickremesinghe to step down, if he cannot appoint an Acting IGP as per the Supreme Court Order.

He told Parliament that the President must uphold the Injunction Order issued by the Supreme Court and appoint an Acting IGP.

"The President cannot get away from this issue,” he said.

“He is the President even today. His responsibilities do not cease even if he becomes a Presidential candidate. His responsibility is to appoint an Acting IGP when there is no IGP.

“Ask the President to resign if he cannot do that. Then, the Acting President can function according to the law of the country. He is trying to resort to an unconstitutional act," he charged.

SP's knowledge seems very shallow. Just because someone says jump do you jump? Or do you stop to think through for yourself the command? If the Supreme Court has not considered the required logistics to implement its order, its ok for someone to raise the issue.

No it's not. Your knowledge is shallow on law just like most Sri lankans. You cannot challenge or question supreme court decisions. That will be contempt against Court. Any issues should be brought during the court case in the court. Not after under parlimantary or executive privileges. Do you think those privileges were given to make such comments. They are abusing there privileges like always.

RW spoilt any chance he had among the educated and urban voters with this matter. He should have never appointed low IQ Tiran and Bandu. Ranil always try to protect rogues and he ends up in dustbin. This is why he was never able to win a presidential election and even a single general election by his own. Won twice thanks to the momentum created by SLFP break away groups and the governments at that time were unpopular.

Ranil is playing dirty politics. Every citizen should adhere to the ruling of the Supreme Court. Several legal cases have been filed against the IGP and it is a fair judgement for suspending him until the cases have been heard and discharged. All countries abide by the decisions of the Judiciary. Considering the Supreme Court ruling, Ranil being still the current President, he should immediately appoint an acting IGP to avoid confusion among the citizens of this country. After all an IGP should be free of any legal cases and should have a clean sheet.

RW thinks he could manipulate the country by twisting, turning and hiding behind some so called absurd legal advise given. The Supreme Court of SL is Supreme. The executive and legislature have to abide by the ruling given. If the legislature doesn't like the ruling, legislate for the future. Further the IGP is a spineless, shameless worm - as the head of law enforcement, he needs to abide by the decrees of the courts of law in the land.

Ranil cannot be above the law. The PM saying there is no rule in the constitution to appoint an acting IGP, I would like to ask the PM how was Deshabandu previously appointed as an acting IGP? The court order clearlerly orders the President. If there is no provision for an acting IGP Ranil must immediately send names to the Constitutional Council three names to be considered to be appointed by Ranil as IGP. Also PM should be brought before the Supreme Count under contempt of court charges.
