Ruwanwella, August 18 (Daily Mirror) - Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa today pledged to abolish the Executive Presidency if he is elected President next month.
Premadasa made this pledge during a rally at Ruwanwella.
"A number of past Presidents have pledged to abolish the Executive Presidency but never did it. I will do it and introduce a system based on the legislature,” he said.

It is very clear that either Ranil or Anura will be the next president. There are three important political changes that should be made urgently: abolish executive presidency, bar MPs from jumping from one side to another, elect MPs for each electorate and abolish the manape. Hope Anura and Sajith will do it.

Downsize Government Expenditures Now Sunday, 18 August 2024 07:48 PM
Excellent if it materialises. Also, Downsize the members in parliament too and be more productive and efficient. Only one person (President or PM) makes the final decision after senior ministers are consulted. There must be an agenda to curtail unnecessary expenditures until more stability is ensured. Current regime only knows to keep on taking loans and increase taxes for their high expenditures every few months. Both local and international loans taken so far and unpaid is around US$100 Billion. New loans are adding up to this figure regularly.

In that case Sajith will have to abandon the post.

People who believe this person and vote for him should be prepared for the worst greedy power hungry leader ever to be leading this country.

Tough for anyone to beat Ranil in that, along with the Rajapakses.

If he makes an election pledge to abolish the executive president and when he is elected president and does not keep his pledge, he should be taken to justice for cheating us and getting us to vote for it.

This saying is very pertinent at this time in this country. "Any fool can sit on the stage among learned intellectuals - as long as he keeps his mouth shut. The moment he opens his mouth and utter a single word, people will recognise that he belongs to a different gathering." Sadly, Sajith has been doing this at every gathering.

EXCELLENT ELECTION PROMISE, WE DO NOT NEED TO HAVE A PRESIDENT WHO AT SOME POINT OF TIME CAN TURN INTO A DICTATOR.

Sajith's father promised before 1988 election and dispatched IPKF. Afterwards Blue camp accused him that it was a foolish act. As the father's son (not the uncle's nephew) he would do what was promised which is a good thing to abolish executive presidency, introducing a new good constitution.

Note to change executive presidency needs 2/3 special majority and approved by the people at a national referendum. It is long a long process.

Present constitution is already violated with Gota's resignation. So no need to follow it as it is any longer as peoples Aragalaya already revolutionized the bahubootha constitution. This presidential election is also the referendum for that and Sajith will do the job. This constitution was to change before June 15, 1995 as promised by Podu-Peramunu and JVP alliance but NPP/JVP power mongols don't talk about it now. New constitution should devolve power to North and Sajith has to endorse this if he wants to win this presidential election. If people don't vote for this cause that will be the end of Sinhala dominance rule and fall back to 1815.

Why not build a bridge where there's no river? That would be better than promising what you will never do in the first place.

Sweet story to listen but impractical, just receiving 20 or 30 seats will not help you do the job. But through rejuvenating your father Genocide Premadasa's MURDER tactic you could abolish it without being elected president.

A very good motive, but current flawed constitution will be the impediment. I hope this man understands the meaning of "Knot of JR". First win the Presidency and talk about abolishing presidency in the Parliamentary Elections. Do not put cart before the horse, you are not going anywhere.

Welcome move. Executive Presidency is not fit for a tiny island nation, also abolish Provincial councils too.

He will do it to take effect after staying in office for 4 years and 9 months. Still worth it. JVP and Ranil won't object to it. Only Rajapaksas and Weerawansa will oppose it.

Sajith Premadasa's statement about abolishing pledges to eliminate the Executive Presidency is a blunt and unconvincing declaration. His lack of a clear plan to achieve this, especially given the internal divisions within his party, the SJB, raises doubts about the seriousness of his intent. Moreover, his own instability in times of crisis further clouds the prospects for the country's future under his leadership. In comparison, Ranil Wickremesinghe, though problematic, is a known entity, albeit one entangled with the Rajapaksas and surrounded by dubious associates. In vain he tolerated all scams during his tenure as president carried out by his cabinet colleagues and cronies.

Simply from the way he behaves already, indications of SP`s Presidential megalomania is quite obvious. Only the Presidency will satisfy that sickness temporally. He is never going to give that up if he comes to power and this is just another fairy tale election promise for the gullible voters.

There are pluses and minuses for a President since the composition of our population is versatile and it will be necessary to hold on to the Presidency as it will give you the wherewithal to take bold decisions the only thing don't lose your head by the power entrusted by the voter, use it for the benefit of the voters. What has happened to the functioning of the Presidency is that all persons who have obtained this sacred power have been running amock in its functionality after a few months of being elected only do not monkey around with the power given to the President!!!!!

Sajith is desperate, so greedy for power, he has started promising this, that and everything under the sun in order to come to power. That's a dangerous state of mind. No one can keep all those promises and someone or many will be disappointed. Then the fun starts. For example, what did he promise the Muslims? What did he promise the Tamils? What did he promise Champika? Does anyone know? Be very very careful of this guy.

Ah let us be fair in judgement. Chandrika ,MR and Ranil all had this in their power to abolish Presidency but did not do so. Sajith did not have the power, he may or may not do it in the future. So the rationale of your argument is untenable as he did not have power to do what he says, but he is the only opposition leader who did many things for schools and the public, without govt. power.

Replace the first two characters of the word "abolish" with "P". It becomes POLISH. You all will polish the Presidency to get more powers.

Rubbish. The Executive presidency is the biggest instrument in the decline of the country since the post was created. If a honest man wielded the position there is some hope but in the hands of all the dishonest leaders we have had so far (and will continue to have into eternity) it's a tool for assured decline.

Now he can say that fearing the consequences of being a President, he did not tookover from Gota. Once he will win the election, immediately he will abolish the Presidency. Like Mrs. Bandaranayake, he will bring rice from the Moon.

Look at the statements he made once he said I will die with the people ,then he said he will spend 24 hours of the day for the welfare of the people.again he said he visits every Ranviruwa once he is elected. then he said he will build CHYITHTHIYA in every village once he comes to power. Latest is when he went to Jaffna few weeks ago he was asking Jaffna public whether they have a flood lit test playing ground in Jaffna. Down fall of the country will begin with the appointment of a ignorant and a stupid leader like Sajith. Voters please beware.
