Salochana Gamage, another further remanded till January 17

Colombo, January 6 (Daily Mirror)- Two suspects, including former Provincial Councillor Salochana Gamage, who were arrested for allegedly accepting a bribe, were further remanded till January 17 by Colombo Chief Magistrate Thanuja Lakmali.

The Chief Magistrate announced that the order on the bail request for the two suspects will be pronounced on the next date.

Salochana Gamage and another businessman were arrested in Pitakotte by the Bribery Commission over a Rs. 9 million bribery incident.

I wonder about the legal basis of the charge. The accused is a private citizen now (whatever he was earlier). Thus the businessman paying him a sum of money cannot be considered a bribe. If the accused paid that money, or a part of it, to an official then it becomes bribery. The most he can be charged is for obtaining money under false pretenses. Mind you, I am not a lawyer.
