School girl falls to death from Lotus Tower

Colombo, October 07 (Daily Mirror) - A female student from Colombo International School fell to her death from the observation deck of the Lotus Tower this afternoon, Colombo, police said, police said.

Police added that a pair of shoes and a school bag were found on the deck.

The Colombo Lotus Tower Management Company (Private) Limited confirmed that, according to CCTV footage, the girl had jumped from the 29th floor of the tower.

Police said that according to initial investigations, it is suspected to be suicide.

The victim is believed to be between 18 and 20 years old. She landed on the third floor. Police investigations are underway.

Meanwhile, the Lotus Tower Management stated that operations at the tower continue as usual.

Really a sad incidence. The statement of the Lotus Tower Management of "operations at the tower continue as usual" is not important and irresponsible. They should have taken into consideration 'SAFETY FIRST' and given the public that observation area is closed temporarily until safety measures are being implemented which is the right things to due.

Very sad to hear this news. Parents and school teachers have to be very alert on the behaviour of children and students. When parents see sudden changes in their behaviour immediate action should be taken to talk to them and keep an eye where they go, whom they meet, what they do unusually. This could be a way of preventing them from taking such drastic actions. Heartfelt condolences to the family.

In any high rise building, the Health and Safety must be maintained as a priority, if you cannot do this, please shut it down. The were 300 officers used to guard a former president but no one around for any supervision for this kind of accident prevention

Shows the utter insensitivity and lack of respect for the parents of this child in making such a statement and continuing with "usual operations" with not even a pause. Did the management even pause to think about the safety issues or the potential for future events of this natures. It is guaranteed that there will be copy cat attempts now that this has occurred. Sri Lanka has a very high rate of suicides, and the lack of mental health professionals and support systems not to mention the economic issues and a bleak future this is not something that should be taken lightly. Is money more important than young lives. Also should Daily Mirror need to have detailed pictures including the child's school bag for all to see? Put your self in the parents shoes.. Shame on you..

First of all I pray to God Almighty to give strength for the parents and the immediate relatives to go through this great loss. It’s so stupid and idiotic on the part of the management of the tower to say that business goes as usual instead of closing it down the operations at least for few days as mark of respect to the child who took her life and to review the safety and security that’s in place and take measures as necessary to prevent occurrences of such unfortunate incidents in the future.
