School student dies after concrete bay collapse in Maskeliya

Colombo, April 04 - Tragedy struck when a concrete bay collapsed killing a pupil of the Gartmore Tamil High School in Maskeliya today.

Maskeliya police reported that 11-year-old S. Anishan, a sixth-year student at the school and a resident of Maskeliya, succumbed to his injuries after being rushed to the hospital.

According to authorities, the concrete bay collapsed as part of a tea garden development project being undertaken in the school grounds. The mishap occurred during school hours.

I feel sorry for the innocent victim. The government must pay a reasonable amount of money as compensation. And also should investigate the incident and ask for a report. Safety should come first. Every organisation must ensure the safety of employees, customers, and the general public They must keep safety standards, and appropriate measures must be taken to maintain the standards. Most of the accidents are due to human errors because they don't concern about safety.

What a waste of life due to poor safety standard and perhaps poor engineering. Design Engineering as well as the Construction organizations had to bear the responsibility for wasting a life, therefore penalized.. Government should not interfere at all.

Sorry to hear the tragic death. However I have been trying to think what is a concrete bay, and what in the heavens name it is doing in a school. Can someone please elucidate?
