Colombo, August 06 (Daily Mirror) - The Cabinet has approved the proposal to raise the annual interest rates for senior citizens' fixed deposits from 8.5% to 10%.

Cabinet Spokesman Bandula Gunawardena said this increase will apply to deposits up to Rs. 1 million for a two-year term.

A sure sign that the elections would be held. However, we senior citizens cannot be deceived by these gimmicks as this sordid regime forgot us for nearly two years. We are determined, as never before, to chase away these scoundrels.

Simple logic just Rs.1500 extra a month. What can a senior citizen do with such an amount. Not enough to even pay the channelling fee for a single visit to a doctor. Abraham Lincoln's famous words automatically come to mind.

I went over to the Bank as I saw this being a senior citizen and was disappointed, since I was informed by the Bank that it has to be passed by the Central Bank which has not yet been approved. Is this election gimmicks.

Do you think that the senior citizens are bloody fools to accept an additional 1.5 per cent for a fixed deposit maturing in 2 years. You have exposed your illieteracy having a poor understanding of numbers. At one time you brought out an argument that Rs. 2500/= per month is sufficient for a family of four. Go and learn your basics as the saying goes when you age you need a doctor to check whether you are suffering from amnesia!!!!!!!

As he took the reins in 2022, he told the nation that he takes over a country that "faces a $ crisis". What avenues has he created during these 2 years to bring in $? Senior citizens were enjoying 15% and the limit of fixed deposit was Rs1.5 million and cost of living was much less compared to now, now cost of living has skyrocketed what is 10% penuts, anyway we will not vote for Ranil surrounded by SLPP, we want our leader to contest under UNP flag elephant and not independent?

Still, the 5% withholding tax is applicable. So what sense does it make to increase the interest by 1.5% and then take back 5% of it? Let's not get confused; senior citizens are not exempted from withholding tax on whatever their income.
