Colombo, August 10 (Daily Mirror)- Claiming that seven plantation companies have agreed to pay estate workers Rs. 1,700 per day, President Ranil Wickremesinghe said he will convene the Wages Board on Monday to discuss the matter.

Addressing the Kandy District Plantation Labour Unions and Youth Leaders meeting today, he said he was ready to introduce special laws to enforce the decision, if necessary.

1700 Rs per day is still a slave wage and pure exploitation for this hard work. My domestic workers already get 300 euros (I've been paying in euros since Corona) a month, even if they are only 18 years old. All estates that do not pay their workers at least 3000 Rs a day should have their license revoked.

The fact that the president of a country announces to the public an increase of 1700 rupees (5.19 euros!) in the daily wages of plantation workers, or perhaps wants to implement this, defies description! Does this man even know under what conditions the "ordinary" person in this country has to live! Is this what the start of the economic upturn and recovery looks like, as he has announced!? These are yet more empty phrases from a failed president!

Estate workers know that agreeing to pay just before the election is NOT the same as actually starting to pay. If these seven companies are genuinely interested in paying ask them to start paying a decent salary now.
