Renowned Sri Lankan composer, instrumentalist and music director Dr. Shelton Premaratne passed away this morning (30) in Australia at the age of 94.

According to information received Dr. Shelton Premaratne was residing in Australia with his son at the time.

Dr. Premaratne made his mark when Sinhala music directly emulated Hindi and Tamil music from India. He was a pioneer in developing a music style that was original and unique to Sri Lanka.

He was a legendary film and drama music director who has composed the music for songs since the 1940s, and sung by almost all professional singers young and old in Sri Lanka. He has won many national and international awards.
