Shooting erupts in Weligama as CCD pursues suspected drug traffickers

Weligama, Dec. 31 (Daily Mirror) - Police have initiated investigations into the shooting incident in Weligama, where a Police Sergeant was killed and a Sub Inspector from the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) was injured when they went to apprehend a group allegedly involved in the drug trade associated with Nadun Chinthaka alias 'Harak Kata, currently in the custody of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

Police said the CCD arrested 11 suspects from a list of 30 individuals identified by the Colombo Crimes Division on Saturday, based on phone analysis reports during the probe into an incident involving Nadun Chintaka's attempt to escape from CID custody. Among the arrested were four women.

On Saturday night, a team of Colombo Crimes Division officers travelled to Weligama in a van to apprehend another group mentioned on the list.

During the operation, CCD officers attempted to arrest a group staying in a hotel. However, upon reaching the location, an individual fired at them from in front of the hotel, prompting the CCD officers to retaliate.

Investigations revealed that two officers in the van were injured, and as they tried to leave the scene, a patrol jeep from the Weligama police arrived and opened fire at the van without realizing police officers were inside.

The van continued to drive amidst gunfire and eventually stopped near the Imaduwa entrance of the Southern Expressway, where the injured officers were admitted to the Karapitiya Hospital.

However, a 47-year-old father of two and Sergeant of the Colombo Crimes Division, a resident of Galewela, succumbed to gunshot injuries while a Sub-Inspector of the Colombo Crimes Division is currently receiving further treatment at the Karapitiya Hospital.

The Weligama police had reportedly not been informed in advance about the raid in the Weligama area.

Meanwhile, Police spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa said police have not yet been able to arrest the person responsible for the shooting near the hotel.
