Some 2,000 Buddhist monks abandon robes annually: Champika Ranawaka

MAy 12 (Daily Mirror) - As many as 2,000 Buddhist monks with higher ordination leave their robes annually and the economic crisis is one of the reasons for this, United Republican Front (URF) leader MP Patali Champika Ranawaka said.

Addressing a gathering of leading Buddhist monks at the Nagananda Vihara in Manelwatte, he said everyone should cast aside their differences and unite to revitalize the economy.

He stressed the importance of obtaining blessings of the Buddhist clergy for this.

We have too many. Can’t afford to feed them all. Some found cunning way of building vihara in the north as a way of making money. Let them become an active entrepreneurs or work to pay tax until the country is recover economically.

Elimination of 2000 "who do no work, provide zero contribution to the economical growth" AND ADDITON OF " 2000 who will have to work." This works out to 4000 additional hands. Not a bad bargain in these difficult times.

What is wrong with abandoning robes? Why doesn't he become a monk if he is so concerned? The bigger question is why are small children forced to become monks and their parents rob them of their childhood.
