Colombo, December 27 (Daily Mirror)- The Ministry of Digital Economy has announced the introduction of a special programme to promote digital payments.
Deputy Minister Eranga Weeraratne told the Daily Mirror that nearly 1% to 1.5% of the annual gross domestic product (GDP) is spent on transactions involving banknotes.
He highlighted that payments made using cash can lead to increased fraud and corruption, as well as inefficiencies in the payment process.
As part of the initiative, the government plans to digitize all payments made to state institutions, Minister Weeraratne said.
He further explained that the 'GovPay' mobile application has been introduced to facilitate this transition, with 16 government institutions already integrated into the platform.
Additional institutions are expected to join the application starting in January.
This initiative aims to fully digitize government payments, enhancing efficiency across public services.
Promoting digital payments will reduce human labour, eliminate irregularities and corruption and provide more convenient services to the public, the Deputy Minister added.
