COLOMBO (Daily Mirror) - Following growing calls to sack the committee of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), the SLC board has been suspended and an interim committee led by Arjuna Ranatunga has been appointed by Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe, to address the ongoing challenges within Sri Lanka Cricket.

The Ministry said under the authority granted by Sports Law No. 25 of 1973, the Minister has appointed the interim committee.

The newly established committee members are as follows:

• S. I. Imam, Retired Supreme Court Judge

• Rohini Marasinghe, Retired Supreme Court Judge

• Irangani Perera, Retired High Court Judge

• Arjuna Ranatunga (Chairman)

• Upali Dharmadasa

• Rakitha Rajapakshe, Attorney-at-Law

• Hisham Jamaldeen

Well done sir. Mr. Sports Minister sincerely I have the utmost respect for you. Whether you did this for any other motive I am not sure but this thks best decision this country had made in last few years. Now do not bow down to any pressure, implement what Arjuna and team is giving as suggestions. Please note Arjuna is a man who loves the game even though personally he will have many weakness in current administration skills and game development but he knows the basic. Pls pls for the love of god no one interfere into the decision made by the sports Minister. The game we love must develop at least for the next generation.

You want a commission to go out and play cricket instead of the cricketers? Judges are there to look into the problems facing the ADMINISTRATION of cricket in Sri Lanka not to coach cricketers. Past cricketers may know how to play the game but they have little or no experience of administration of sport. That is why judges are there, - and what they can try to do is create an administrative structure that can manage the sport well. Admittedly, that will be very difficult because big money from gambling is involved and almost nothing can be done to prevent it.

The bookies are not in the game. They are involving themselves in the game from outside. That cannot be stopped except by the players being honest. That is unlikely to happen in a poor country like Sri Lanka because a cricketers playing lifetime is short and the money offered by the bookies is far more than a cricketer can earn in a lifetime of playing cricket. Only a very small number of cricketers have succeeded in overcoming the temptation of bribery. Most of our Sri Lankan cricketing heroes have succumbed to it.

To the Suspended Committee- Don’t try put spanner in the works for Arjuna and the committee. Let them first take corrective action to lift the standard of cricket, we realise it’s going to take time not overnight. Probe appointments and financial irregularities, make sure documents and records are not destroyed.
