Sri Lanka engages Liberia for furthering economic ties



Sri Lankan Ambassador Kana Kananathan met President Joseph Boakai of the Republic of Liberia at the Executive Mansion in Monrovia yesterday afternoon.

The meeting marks the first bilateral engagement undertaken by a Sri Lankan diplomat, which was intensifying engagement covering political, trade and investment and people-to-people domains.

President  Boakai said this is a historic and important landmark in the bilateral relations between Liberia and Sri Lanka highlighting fifteen years of diplomatic relations.

President Joseph Boakai extended his commendations to President Ranil Wickremesinghe for his swift and effective measures in stabilizing Sri Lanka's economy. He said following the significant economic crisis of 2022, which posed severe challenges to the nation, President Wickremesinghe took decisive steps to address the issues head-on. His leadership and strategic initiatives have been instrumental in steering the country towards recovery, ensuring economic stability, and restoring public confidence. The President of Liberia lauded these efforts, recognizing the remarkable turnaround achieved within a remarkably short period. This commendation underscores the importance of strong and decisive leadership in times of crisis, and President Wickremesinghe's actions serve as a commendable example for nations facing similar challenges.

Ambassador Kananathan expressed his intent to strengthen economic cooperation, promote trade and investment, and foster sustainable development.
The meeting of Kananathan and the President of Liberia provided an opportunity for high-level interaction between Sri Lanka and Liberia and addressed the objective and further cementing the bonds of friendship and collaboration that Sri Lanka enjoys with Africa and both President Boakai and Kananathan agreed to work together to strengthen the friendship and mutual trust.

Kananathan was invited by the Government of Liberia as election observer for the recently concluded Presidential Elections which was held in October”2023. Liberia”s main exports are rubber followed by diamonds, gold  and iron ore.
