Sri Lanka moves to amend Constitution on presidential and parliamentary terms

Colombo, July 10 (Daily Mirror) - The Cabinet of Ministers has greenlit a resolution aimed at amending specific articles of the Constitution concerning the terms of office for the President and Parliament.

This decision targets articles 30 (2), 62 (2), and 83 (b) of the Constitution, which govern the duration of presidential and parliamentary terms.

Recent observations have pointed out discrepancies between the tenure of the President and the duration of parliamentary terms as stipulated in the mentioned articles.

Currently, Article 83 (b) allows for a presidential term exceeding six years, whereas the proposed amendment seeks to substitute this with a term not exceeding five years.

These enlightened morons have no other ptoductive duty rather than constutional ammendments. Weren't those earlier clauses superseded by the 19th ammendment? One who drafted the 19th ammendment once said in parliament that it was not properly done. Always keep loopholes purposely for greedy power mongles' advantage. 2019 presidential election held as per the presidential term stipulated in 19th ammendment passed without a referendum as it wasn't a requirement and deemed already a part of the constitution. If these efforts to call a useless referendum citing it the Mandate and postpone presidential election, it is the end of everything.

This is to give more time for president to recover from economic crisis.. We don't get politics right in sri lanka and it goes for the wants and needs of all in power. They manipulate the constitution as and when they want to suit their needs and desire . Poor 22 Lankans and they are under modern slavery.

It is clear how long the Presidential term is, and the same for Parliament term too. Both now made to be 5 years already. There are many matters President and Parliament can be looking at. Why waste government employee time drafting changes, and seeking 2/3 majority to pass this, instead of looking and other things to do?

Gotabaya was elected only for five years. Ranil was a circumstantial president and not a people elected president. He has no right to stay in the office even one day after his term is over. The SC at the start of the week, confirmed the term is for five years only. The decision was based on the current constitution.

Wrong time to open the constitution for an amendment. In the guise of the term amendment other changes could also be passed. After the Supreme Court order the term of the President is firm so no need for a constitutional amendment ar this time. It should be done after the next election. If the constitution is opened even an amendment could be made by Pohottuwa to allow foreigners to contest the election.
