A gem merchant in Nivithigala has found a blue sapphire in the shape of Sri Lanka.

The gem merchant Rohan Wasantha Dissanayake of NIvithigala said he bought it from a gem miner in the Karavita area.

The gem stone is in the shape of our Island home Sri Lanka and the relief of land, including the Jaffna Peninsula, Mannar and Trincomalee are clearly visible.

The gem merchant said he forwarded it to the Gem and Jewellery Authority on December 24 and obtained a certificate confirming that it is a blue sapphire.

He said Gemologists M.J.M. Dharmasekara and Janaka Hemachandra who performed the microscopic examination identified it as a blue sapphire of the natural corundum stamp.

“They told me that it is a very rare blue sapphire. I forwarded it to the Gem and Jewellery Authority and obtained a certificate. Media reports in the past regarding several gem stones of rare stamp had been challenged. I don’t expect to cut or polish it and I will leave it as it is until I can sell it for my price. I am hopeful that I will have the opportunity to forward it for local and international exhibitions," he said.
