Sri Lankan child molested on board plane

An Indian man was taken into custody by the Katunayake International Airport Police on suspicion of sexually abusing a Sri Lankan girl, about nine years of age, who was a fellow passenger.

He had been arrested by airline staff and handed over to the Police. The suspect and the victim had been flying from Riyadh in Saudi Arabia.

The suspect, a 49-year-old carpenter, who arrived from Riyadh was a transit passenger flying to India through Katunayake.

The victim, her mother and sister were on their way back after visiting her father employed in Saudi Arabia. They were residents of Getahetta in Awissawella.

The girl and the suspect were admitted to Negombo General hospital for medical examination. Police said the suspect would be produced before the Negombo magistrate.

OIC Katunayake Airport Police CI Malcolm Path and SI Chandana are conducting further investigations.
