Parliament, Dec. 5 (daily Mirror)- Sri Lankan children will be able to complete university degrees when they reach the age of 21 in accordance with proposed the new education reforms, Minister of Education Susil Premajayantha told Parliament today.

The Minister said a child will be able to enter university when he or she reaches the age of 17.

"Also, a new concept of pre-primary education will be introduced soon," he added.

After which they will leave the country. So we give them free education with tax payer's money and they migrate. You have to find a way to make them give back to the country like in Singapore.

No, many can't leave. Most SL graduates have no marketable skills nor a standard of English to work in a professional place overseas, except perhaps Korea, Middle East and few others in semi skilled jobs. SL should encourage its graduate to compete in global job markets rather than protesting demanding gvt jobs.

Concept is good. But the moment they enter University they are spoilt by JVP affiliated student unions, hence extra one two years are wasted in strikes on trivial and unconcerned matters.

This is possible only if the years in school from Year 1 to Year 12 is reduced, reducing the syllabuses in the different subjects and reducing the minimum years earmarked at present for various Degrees. The graduates will not be as smart as the olden day graduates.

Yes that's a good idea. But make sure is they doesn't complete the degree by age of 21, they should pay for the additional years for staying in the university. some undergraduates wasting academic time by protesting against various issues while in the university without completing their degree

Only useless graduates who were wasting their time by attending protests , making and fixing posters for JVP and those who selected some outdated courses and those seeking government ice jobs will be unemployed. Those who have learned life lessons and obtained useful skills and knowledge will be able to find employment even while they are still in the final stages of university education. So look at yourself rather than blaming others .

The Education Minister's initiative is commendable. Currently, students spend three years preparing for Ordinary Level exams. Back in the 60s/70s, we accomplished this in two years seamlessly. The current education structure with grades 9, 10, and 11 seems to be an inefficient use of students' valuable time.

More than a degree at 21 what is important is what they will learn in those21 years. Constant meddling with the systems, delays in holding exams due to strikes and political upheavals and in the end an inability to find suitable employment.No wonder they leave the country after they qualify.I t wasn't like that always.In the early years people returned even after their post graduate studies to make a useful contribution to society

Hello Dr Susil, Children don't do degrees. At the age of 21 they are not "children", they are adults. First and foremost, treat adults like adults, not children. All you parliamentarians talk about your fellow citizens in a derogatory manner. Your fellow citizens are more educated and skilled than you guys. Please find another job soon and give this portfolio to another.
