Sri Lankan fishing trawler seized in Maldives with over 450kgs of heroin and Ice

Colombo, Nov 24 (Daily Mirror)- A Sri Lankan fishing trawler, was seized by the Maldivian Coast Guard after it was found carrying over 450 kilograms of illicit drugs. The haul included 344 kg of crystal methamphetamine (ICE) and 124 kg of cocaine.

The operation followed an intelligence-sharing effort between the Sri Lanka Navy and the Maldivian Coast Guard.

The Maldivian authorities were alerted by Sri Lanka's Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) early on November 23, when the trawler entered the Maldivian Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). Initially, concerns were raised about potential mechanical issues or distress aboard the vessel.

Upon investigation, the Sri Lanka Navy identified the trawler as being linked to drug trafficking activities. Acting on this intelligence, the Navy shared the information with the Maldivian Coast Guard, who initiated a search operation.

During the operation, five suspects, aged between 21 and 37 and from Dondra and Trincomalee, were arrested alongside the narcotics. The trawler, the drugs, and the suspects were seized by the Maldivian Coast Guard.

Both the Sri Lankan and Maldivian intelligence agencies are currently investigating whether the drugs were intended for Sri Lanka or another country in the region.
