Sri Lankan tycoon joins South Asia’s rich list



Colombo, August 10 (Daily Mirror) - As of 2025, Mukesh Ambani, chairman and managing director of Reliance Industries, remains the wealthiest individual in India and South Asia with an estimated net worth of $118 billion — and among those making the region’s billionaire ranks is Sri Lankan business magnate Ishara Nanayakkara, now valued at $1.6 billion.
 
His vast business empire spans telecom, energy, petrochemicals, and retail, placing him in a league of his own among the region’s richest.
 
While Ambani’s fortune overshadows his regional counterparts, several other South Asian nations boast billionaires making significant economic waves — including Sri Lanka.
 
Sri Lanka: Ishara Nanayakkara — $1.6 Billion
 
In Sri Lanka, Ishara Nanayakkara has emerged as the nation’s wealthiest person, overtaking long-time tycoon Dhammika Perera. With a net worth of around $1.6 billion, Nanayakkara leads LOLC Holdings, a diversified financial services and investment conglomerate operating in more than 10 countries. He has been instrumental in driving Sri Lanka’s presence in global microfinance and insurance markets, positioning himself as a key figure in the island’s corporate landscape.
