Social Empowerment State Minister Anupa Pasqual and its officials were taken to task by South Korea Disaster Relief Foundation (SKDRF) President Cho Sung Lea for getting late by 30 minutes for a scheduled meeting in Colombo.
The meeting, which was held yesterday at the Social Empowerment Ministry, looked into how South Korea could help Sri Lanka overcome its current economic crisis.
South Korea became one of the most developed economies in the world in just 40 years and remains one of the few success stories.
"Getting late to start a scheduled meeting by 30 minutes is not a good sign. Ministers should be responsible for keeping their promises and being punctual,” Lea started.
“If this had happened in South Korea such officials would have been questioned and disciplinary action would be taken,” he said.
“There is no point in meeting such Ministers,” he said.
“If a meeting is scheduled for a specific time, it must begin at that time. If such Ministers cannot do that, there is no point in meeting such persons," Lea lambasted.
"Telling lies and making promises in Sri Lanka has become an ordinary thing, and it has become part of their culture. As a country, people should be ashamed to hear such things from a foreigner. If people in Sri Lanka cannot change that habit, the country will not be able to establish connections with foreigners," he said.
"People must keep to their promises and never forget to fulfil them. Even if life goes on, promises should be fulfilled. Even Ministers should do the same. If not, there is no point in meeting such Ministers. People should not tell lies. They must have a better understanding," he said.
“Therefore, there should be a change in the education system and the thinking patterns of the people in Sri Lanka,” Lea added. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)

Typical Sri Lankan state sector mentality. Are these the guys with whom this nation and the pin president attempting to revive the nation? If this state minister has any self-respect he should resign forthwith. or else, the president, although being the puppet of the jarapakshas, should chase him away, never to return. This was a meeting where discussions were to be held on ways in which South Korea could assist to re-build the nation.

Haventv we been observing this anyway that SL can't be a developed country unless drastic changes happens? First and foremost, get rid of useless and incompetent politicians and public servants. Secondly, change the SL education system and the way people think. He is absolutely right. These morons don't deserve to be even admin assistants. Korea, Japan and Singapore did not become developed countries by luck. Certainly, not with people like we have in SL. SL becoming a developed country is a very very very long shot. It ain't going to happen.

Breakdown in discipline and several other factors have brought chaos to the country. This shows that these politicians and in general the others in high positions who should set an example have not been reprimanded when delinquent due to the laws being manipulated coupled with an easy going attitude as they are confident no action will be taken by those under whose purview they are held accountable and responsible. So this is an eye opener to keep a tight leash on these misfits instead of mollycoddling them. Korea has taught our nincompoops a bitter lesson of punctuality as the saying goes TIME BEFORE TIME IS NO TIME, TIME AFTER TIME IS NO TIME," SO TIME IS TIME"

This foreign delegate did not mince his words and spoke about the basic disciplines needed to govern a country. Thank you for giving it straight to the clown himself. Hope he understood the message, as he still remained in his seat. What we all heard was a very Sri Lankan habit amongst those holding authority. Going late to an event is seen as a privilege by most people (a sign showing their importance). They cannot ask their subordinates to be punctual when they themselves guilty of it all the time. This is their slave/master mentality and until they can change this (very doubtful), we will be the frogs in the well forever.

Tragically, you cannot imagine this happening in the colonial days or the early years of Sri Lanka Independence, when Sri Lanka was far ahead of South Korea in terms of it's economy, education and wealth. Koreans doesn’t seem to know that coming late for an occasion and making people to wait are ways to show the importance and stauquo of a person in Sri Lanka. I see lot of comments here saying that the education system should be changed to teach discipline. That is not true and punctuality alone is not going to fix the problem of the country. People have to learn to show love, kindness, respect for others, self respect, sacrifice, selflessness etc. until then, this country will not prosper. No point in blaming the leaders. These leaders are voted by people. The 6.9 million people who voted for a racist and the most stupid GR should answer for the current plight of the country.

The sri Lankan practice has been that by getting late and keep others waiting make them important. But it is a shame. In where I live if you get late 3 times in a quarter you are fired even without an inquiry. Indiscipline and lack of education and upbringing is the main reason for this. I agree, the military bore the brunt during the war and perhaps some high level strategists, as for the rest of them, I’ll leave to the readers to decide their true worth.

This incidence should be a good eye opener for the president to clean up the mess by getting rid of this type of hooligans to build a efficient cabinet. It is really sad and shameful that a foreign diplomat made this remarks on the inefficiency of our government department. President appears to be spineless to dismiss this donkey.

South Koreans deserve a big gratitude from Sri Lankans. They helped us in many crucial occasions in the past. They were the first to send ship loads of computers etc. soon after the internal war ended. Besides, the former UNO chief, a South Korean himself, visited the war ravaged areas and gave a witness statement that there seem no killing of innocent civilians. His statement helped Sri Lankan govt. a lot then. If Ban Ki Moon was there in UNO still as a chief, Sri Lanka would not face all the pressure from international organizations. He would have somehow covered us. There won’t be any travel ban for army officials etc. Mr. Ban Ki Moon went really out of the way to help the Sri Lankan govt. He may have helped. Sri Lanka to satisfy India. His assistant Vijay Nambiar would have influenced him to do so. Still Sri Lankans owe a big thanks to South Korean UN Chief for that big lie that saved face of Sri Lanka…at least for some time.

excellent lecture. It had to be a foreigner from South Korea a majority irreligious country to teach what it means to be disciplined and honour the time.

One most important thing in SL which the Korean officials failed to pointout is, setting fire to shops, houses, buses, killing of journalists, threatening of witnesses, destroying evidences, bribe at every stage, etc. There is vast developments in these activities.

Thank You Korean Delegate for teaching this fellow a good lesson. Most of the 225 we have in that house are absolute crap and not worth a cent. They sit in that house at the expense of our tax money and know only to rob. Thank you for the guts shown by you and we salute your actions.

Enough is enough ! Reject all political parties in the parliament. Now we should find out a new generation of leaders between the age of 30-50 years with university degrees. They should necessarily have attended Sunday religious school.

The Leader of the Korean Delegate is wrong. He does not know how heavy is the workload of SL Ministers'. No1. He will have to go and wash the backsides of the President, Prime Minister, and Senior Members of his party. No 2. Then he has to collect 10% Commissions on hundreds of projects. No 3. Then when the members of criminal gangs in his electorate get arrested by the Police, he has to get them released. No 4. He also has to attend weddings and funerals of relatives of his supporters. No. 5. Last but not least, he has to make sure his wife and any number of his mistresses are happy. Then of course normal duties of politicians. This Head of the Korean Delegation has no idea how hard our ministers work. The Korean delegation must apologize to our Minister. .

Of course. Being late is a kind of norm in our country. The minister concerned is highly unlikely to change his behaviour because his colleagues are the same. Also, the voters often elect corrupt and incompetent people and then complain later about their misdeeds! Even after facing an economic disaster, if people do not vote wisely in the next election, it is better to accept and live with such behaviour rather than bother about it!!

This has been the case that general public is blaming these inactive politicians. Foreign delegate seems to have observed his role for sometime and then fired at for not being punctual. Punctuality is a must for the state workers abroad. These miserable politicians must be ashamed of accusations of this nature by foreign delegates. However, his lethargic role has drawn a huge disgrace to the country.

If this minister has even an iota of self respect, then he must resign immediately. What will the President do on this? Interesting to what his action on this minister.

Spot on! This goes right down from top to bottom. Same in everyday life not only here but in many other Asian, South European and Latin American countries. Total disrespect to keep others waiting. As the saying goes: "Punctuality is the courtesy of kings."

@Cam Sab: Do you mean to say that Ban Ki Moon , the former UN chief, came very LATE deliberately to witness the casualties in the war and told a deliberate LIE that there were no civilian casualties in order to hide the fact from international community??

This Korean minister is not a saint. He knew well what type of people are there in the govt. of Sri Lanka. He knew well Rajapakses are still ruling through RW. There is nothing called help in business. It is all business for them. End of the day, it is they who will benefit. They might do some small freebies here and there to deceive the ordinary people and make a big business deal with the corrupt government. He clearly says telling lies and not keeping promises are in the culture of Sri Lanka. He must be knowing that already. Still he wanted to talk to the representative of a corrupt government.

We are the Ignorant Saturday, 24 December 2022 11:55 AM
Kumar! YOU REQALLY HIT IT ON THE HEAD with your reply. It is we - the voters who willingly voted for these clowns. nobody forced us. We were very lazy in our basic duty for not choosing the right persons for the job. We were moved by the race, religion, language, caste based bias for the present fate and the free gift of hot water flask, free liquor and specifically the LOW CASTE we were born in, carried a lot of weight in making our decisions. We the ignorant, let by the dishonest, have voted for so long for so little, we are capable to vote again for the same bunch, based on hatred for other Sri Lankans every next time. Who will stop us????
