Stringent measures in the offing for health sector donations

Health Minister Nalinda Jayatissa announced that future donations to the health sector must align with the government’s national development plan.

Speaking at an event yesterday, Minister Jayatissa stressed the need to streamline contributions from local philanthropists and international organisations to ensure that they are utilised effectively.

“We aim to use donations systematically,” the Minister stated.

“Going forward, donations will not be accepted for political or personal agendas. While these contributions are often made with good intentions, they can create challenges for the government in the long run,” he added.

He cited examples of hospitals constructed through donations but later facing shortages of doctors and equipment, which often lead to public protests.

“In some cases, politicians push for their local hospitals to be upgraded to general hospital standards, which may not align with national priorities,” he explained.

This is very good decision. Many pharmaceutical companies are known to provide donations and then expect special preferences at tender and drug purchases.

Every province must have a Fully equipped National Hospital. These should be properly manned. To improve the health service invite Sri Lankan or even foreign doctors with or without Sri Lankan citizenship to help out. They need not compete with local doctors and upset them. If they want paid employment, send them to vacant places.There are SL doctors with foreign citizenship. They wish to carry out charity medical practice. Please allow them to be re registered. They can be monitored by the GMC.

During the period of Sunami, Sri Lankan doctors with foreign citizenship came and helped out. Other countries and health services in other planets are better off than ours.

Many doctors who have received free education at both school and university at great cost to the country desert it to make money overseas . A conbination of guilt and need to be seen as saviours leads them to want to do charity work on their holidays , but never full time. Most times they use this work to get tax exemptions , build up CV and even get awards. Then they post on social media how poor their country is and how great they are to save it by their free 2 day clinic or donation.

This is what is called professional approach in planning. Government set the vision, mission and strategy. Then identify what is, where and when is needed. Then uses resources from various avenues to deliver those. Just because someone gives something free, government should not get it and educate the donor to be in line with government plan. If donor doesn’t agree, say “ No. Thank you “ The reason is wrong asset at wrong time at wrong place would not deliver intended benefits and it will be a liability for the government. First time I heard this from a government. Kudos to NPP being bold to say this. Many uneducated will not understand this.

I know it is hurtful when you guys were outclassed by a leader from a humble beginning. If you have any class, help the country without being a slave to corrupt people. I would like to know whether you have a national development policy. You do not have a policy at all. That is why different ministers tell different things. Also, understand that state does not have financial resources needed to carry out all the necessary expenses. Things will become much more difficult in years to come. You talk nonsense. Reality is that both health and education sectors run using donor money. This is true even in the higher education. A beggar is going to place conditions. You will understand soon. This clearly shows that these ministers know nothing about the existing fiscal space of the country. feel very sad.

Eye Hospital needs Injections. They are imported by the Private Sector. Donors buy these and hand over to Eye Surgeons at Eye Hospital. Is there anything wrong with this? Govenment is supplying a substitute brand the the doctors do not wish to use it on patients... WHERE DO WE STAND?

Have a plan then look for help to achieve the objectives in the plan, not the other way round, which is what usually happens in SL. The plan can be divided into two parts Part A the things in the plan that can be achieved with existing resources. Part B where you may need help. Be very transparent with your plans, you will be surprised at how many people institutions are out there willing to help in different ways, sometimes for nothing, and how much can be achieved when educated creative minds look at a problem.

There is sense in what the Comrade says. Investment should be according to a master plan. It is not only building a hospital or any such facility or adding equipment but it must also have a sustainability plan. What it means is how to maintain such facility. Unless government allocates adequate funds for maintenance in the form of personnel drugs and general up keep the investment either goes waste or will be grossly under utilized. Comrade. Please put out the plan and have a implementation mechanism with qualified people to monitor.

very valid point -Manthripala Sirisena got a hospital for kidney deceases established in polonnaruwa without looking in to the logistical aspects Also this hospital should have got constructed in a area with easy access to a bigger population than his electorate .MRs projects in hambanthota is another example of white elephants

Most Govt. hospitals have only grand buildings donated by foreign countries or do not agencies. There are no proper equipment or doctors. Classic example is Maharagama cancer hospital which has a special ward for stem cell transplant. But the doctors do not do it there citing various reasons and ask their patient to admit in private hospitals to carryout this procedure costing over Rs.35M. How many can afford it.

What a stupid man!!! Obviously has no idea that most of the hospitals even leading government hospitals in Colombo have no drugs or other supplies! Patients are even asked to bring plaster as hospital doesn’t have proper plaster!!! Most hospital run solely on donations as the government is unable to provide basically anything!!! I agree that donations have to be streamlined but what this joker wants is to get the majority donations into his pocket!!!

What this Minister of Health, Cabinet Spokesman and Chief Organizer of ruling party says is give us the money and do not tell what to do with that money and we will decide what to do. Why can't the public listen to him and do as they are told? If Minister decides to buy some expensive cars or palatial houses, with that money, be happy.
