Students, parents petition Supreme Court to cancel Grade 5 exam papers

Colombo, October 15 (Daily Mirror) - Twenty-seven (27) students, along with their parents, filed a Fundamental Rights petition before the Supreme Court today, seeking an order to cancel Paper I and Paper II of the Grade 5 Scholarship Examination held on September 15.

The petitioners are also requesting that the Grade 5 Scholarship Examination be re-conducted.

This petition was filed through Attorney-at-Law Manjula Balasooriya and the petitioners have named Commissioner General of Examinations Amith Jayasundara, Prime Minister and Minister of Education Dr. Harini Amarasuriya and several others as respondents.

I do not think children are ready to sit for the exam again.

Personally, I think it is time to cancel this Year 5 scholarship examination completely. There is no such examination in any of the education systems in other countries. It is such a burden on kids, and the biggest problem is that the parents are taking it on themselves as a serious issue to pressure children to achieve good grades.
