Sufficient water is to hydro-power plants, irrigation tanks fill over 80%

Colombo, May 31 (Daily Mirror) - With the increased rainfall in the catchment areas of the central hills, the hydro-power plants are receiving sufficient capacity of water, the Irrigation Department’s Irrigation (Hydrology) Director, Eng. S.P.C. Sugeeshwara Bandara said.

He also said that this is a positive sign for continuous hydroelectricity generation and mentioned that the total water capacity of the country's irrigation tanks has reached 80 percent.

Certain irrigation tanks are spilling water at a considerable rate, and the release capacity is expected to increase with the higher rainfall anticipated in the catchment areas tonight, he added.

Therefore, people in low-lying areas are urged to remain vigilant over possible sudden floods.
