Sunil Jayarathne assumes duties as Civil Aviation Chairman

Colombo, Nov 04 (Daily Mirror) - Additional Director General of Sri Lanka Customs Sunil Jayarathne has been appointed as the Chairman of the Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka.

Jayarathna assumed duties in the office this morning in the presence of several officials including the Director General of the CAASL.

He holds over 37 years of experience in the Department of Customs while also being the Media Spokesman for the last three-and-a-half years.

He is a postgraduate in Customs Law and Management from the University of Sri Jayawardenepura and the University of Canberra, Australia.

Why what does the country's “civil aviation” sector consists of? A complicated domestic aviation industry? Or multiple operating airlines? 10 airports? Ehhh no. Last i checked there is one functioning international airport and this dude knows the place like the back of his hand. The problem in hiring in SL is they hire industry insiders who have been living in the same muck for decades. They don't know or have the vision for improvement that they haven't done during their tenure. Or they hire an idiot relative. Better to hire someone who has experience but is an outsider. Fresh perspective but with knowledge.

The Chairman need not be an aviation expert as there are professionals who could guide him. As a well-qualified Customs officer with he can look at all the nefarious activities going on at the Airport and try to introduce systems to curb them.

It just goes to show what NPP is all about. At least I would expect person with such a caliber to reject the job offer if he understand anything about aviation as its a highly technical field.
