Supreme Court night session still continues over IGP’s appointment



Colombo, July 18 (Daily Mirror) - The hearing into nine Fundamental Rights petitions challenging the appointment of Deshabandu Tennakoon as the Inspector General of Police is still continuing before a Supreme Court three-judge bench.

The petitioners are seeking an interim order restraining Deshabandu Tennakoon from discharging the duties and functioning in the office of IGP.

The hearing into these petitions continued for several days, and therefore with the consent of all parties, the Supreme Court decided to hear these petitions until their conclusion at the initial stage.

The Supreme three-judge-bench comprises Justice Yasantha Kodagoda, Justice Achala Wengappuli and Justice Mahinda Samayawardena.  

Geoffrey Alagaratnam PC, Upul Jayasuriya PC, Shamil Perera PC, Saliya Pieris PC, Viran Corea PC, Senior Counsel Suren Fernando and Thishya Weragoda appeared for the petitioners, while Romesh de Silva PC appeared for IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon. Senior Additional Solicitor General Nerin Pulle appeared for the Attorney General.
