Sydney woman had brain scan after being choked by Sri Lankan cricketer Danushka Gunathilaka, court documents allege
A Sri Lankan cricketer in Australia for the T20 World Cup choked a woman so forcefully, she had a brain scan at a hospital, court documents allege.
Danushka Gunathilaka, 31, was arrested at the team's hotel in Sydney's CBD Sunday morning and charged with four counts of sexual assault.
It's alleged he raped a woman from the city's eastern suburbs the previous evening. He remains behind bars after a failed bail application earlier this week.
A police facts sheet released by the court alleges Mr Gunathilaka forced himself on the woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, several times.
The graphic allegations had previously been the subject of a suppression order.
It's alleged the woman was, at one point, choked so forcefully she "feared for her life", and, that the next morning she called a counselling service and couldn't stop crying.
The documents allege the cricketer met the woman on a dating app on October 29, and that they chatted by text and video in the subsequent days.
It's alleged Mr Gunathilaka encouraged the woman to travel to Brisbane to see him, which she declined.
However, the documents allege the pair agreed to meet in person on November 2 at Opera Bar, in Sydney's CBD.
Police claim the pair then went to Frankie's Pizza, on Hunter Street, before walking to Circular Quay to catch a ferry back to the alleged victim's home.
The documents allege the pair had consumed several drinks, but that the woman did not believe either was affected by alcohol.
The documents allege that during the ferry ride, Mr Gunathilaka pressed his body against the woman, kissed her "forcefully", and slapped her on the bottom.
When the pair arrived at the woman's home, it's alleged Mr Gunathilaka forced himself on her several times, and, during one assault, choked her so hard she couldn't breathe.
Police say the woman made a complaint to officers on November 5, and went to the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital where she underwent a Sexual Assault Investigation Kit and got a brain scan to check for any injury resulting from "repeated choking".
The documents allege the woman saw a condom on the floor next to her bed during one of the assaults, despite asking Mr Gunathilaka to wear one.(ABC News)

This boy is a 31 year old active youth. Sex is a natural biological need a boy of that age would very well need too regardless of whether he is a cricketer or a monk. However, he should have been more careful. Based on what we hear, there was clear intention to have sex for both and there was consent for normal safe sex as well. DG appeared to have crossed the line at this point only by not sticking to the safety rule. That is where he is in breach of their unwritten agreement. Terrible for the victim of this assault if what she is saying is all true. I hope justice is served and she recovers from the trauma of the assault. From the details emerging it looks like she made some terrible decisions leading up to this assault. Very unfortunate for the image of the country and for SL cricket but most reasonable people will understand the difference between a crazed individual and his disgusting behaviour and a country. The court case I’m sure will be fair and swift unlike here, where it will drag on for 25 years and where the President pardons murderers at will. This has nothing to do with Buddhism or Sri Lanka just as the mob violence episode in Pakistan where the Sri Lankan factory manager was killed had anything to do with Islam.

I live in Australia and have been living for sometime. Australia is a great, free and beautiful country, but only if you obey the laws of the land. There are no jokers here like in SL and wrong doers are dealt with severely by law enforcement agencies. No excuses, no favours. Politicians, corrupt police and corrupt public servants are not here to be seen. Everyone is treated equally before the law and no interference by anyone. Politicians never get involved in these. Even this guy will get a fair hearing before being found guilty. That's why these countries are called developed countries and that's why they stay that way. Systems in SL and Australia are like sky and earth. I recently visited SL and got really frustrated with everything in SL. Customer service is non existent and there are no manners. Why is it that in the statement/evidence that has been reported never mentions the women asking him to "leave" or to "stop"...Crital info that should have been reported in these articles (if she actually had asked him to stop or to leave)....He may have had prior incidents, he may be a womeniser, maybe he is scum...But not every incident can be judged in the same manner - innocent until proven guilty, there is always two sides to the story.

This dark skin 'village puppa' swung on the wide ball and lost his career. Anyone who is paid by the public funds and breaks the disciplinary code of conduct should not be defended by anyone. It looks as there is more to the story than what we know, this seems a repeat of what he must have being doing as a habit and this time he got burnt. Let any idiot attorney to defend him for free, if they want bad publicity. This guy needs to be incarcerated period !

Fair play, Serious doubts about this article. It says they both went to the house together. It was stated that the police traced a car that was hired by SLC cricket took him there. Was it that he visited her later? As for comments about faiths, how come when something bad happens it’s a Buddhist country! If not multi religious multi racial! Aragalaya was about One Country! And it is holidays enjoyed by all faiths! White is not white when there’s a shade of grey in it. Punishment to all wrong doing, who ever it is.

In the first place, is he allowed to party outside while on tour. Let SLC answer for this. Is this the first time he’s in this kind of situation ? How many good players have been rejected from fitness tests, so doesn’t SLC care for any discipline. ? SLC management and specially the Selectors too should be penalised for this incident, so it doesn’t happen again. Even though he’s a Buddhist, he’s disgraced all Sri Lankans in full Christians, Muslims, Hindus, etc. Bad behaviours will do no good.
