Tense situ during Trinity, St. Thomas rugby match: Police says case settled

The rugby match between Trinity College in Kandy and St. Thomas' College in Mt. Lavinia ended in a tense situation where a match referee was assaulted after S. Thomas’ College beat Trinity College at Havelock Park in Colombo yesterday.

When the match ended, several Trinity players surrounded the referee to question him over the dispute during the match. It was reported that a female supporter and several other Trinity supporters hit and manhandled the referee who was walking back to the dressing room.

A video circulating on social media showed the woman slapping the referee .

It was reported that the referee had lodged a complaint with the Narahenpita Police regarding the assault.

Reports claimed that the female involved in the incident is a sister of one of the player from the Trinity College rugby team.

Meanwhile, when Daily Mirror contacted the OIC of the Narahenpita Police, he said that both parties had agree to settled the matter without further legal action.(DSB)

Whatever happened to the rigorous discipline instilled in us by the great men of integrity such as CJO, LF, GYS and HA that Trinity was so fortunate to have had? We were taught to accept the decisions of the referee without question. Trinity has now gone to thugs. Great shame indeed.

Our standard of referring too is poor, but this does not give a license to man handle him. SLR has to addressed the referring issue very seriously. I would suggest is to bring back all the old referrers who have given up on the whistle. A bad referee could kill a good game and a deserving victory for the team playing well.

This happens when you get to go to big schools after O/L's just for 1 or 2 years. They think that not even them but even their grandparents were born in big schools (probably wouldn't have even been schooled!)

ITs sad that its become a dirty culture where even criminals are elected to parliament today even with a high majority and has become a life style including media. Its best the students and old boys stick to their truespirit of sportsmanship and keep away of this virus and stand for what is right and stand against what is wrong where ever it be. And even meet both teams meet each other including the officials forget calling is a bad day and standup as sportsmen who are someday supposed to carry the national flag as a TEAM of their performance.

Sri Lanka Rugby must take action to ban those involved for the rest of the season or take some form of legal action. People must learn that incidents like this will not be condoned so as to avoid repetition. Like what has happened with a certain minister in the present government!

I am ashamed to see how the Trinitians of today are behaving. I hate to think how an old Principal like N.S Walter would have reacted to such behaviour. This is not the first time Trinitians behaved this way. Go back a few years when there was a tied Bradby Shield and the Royal Captain walked up to receive the shield as the current holders of the shield. The behaviour then was despicable to say the least. As an old Trinitian and an old Royalist I am very very saddened to see our Alma Maters being brought down to this level. Hope the school Principals are able to step in and arrest this low level of discipline. It starts with how you filter who you admit the schools. It is not who is able to pay the fees or give a hefty donation to the school fund.
