Three killed in train tragedy

Colombo, October 12 (Daily Mirror)- Three persons were killed after they were knocked down by the express train bound to Maradana from Matara, Police said.

They said the accident occurred in Katukurunda, Kalutara.

Two persons were killed on the spot while the other, a child, was pronounced dead on admission to the Nagoda Hospital.

These stupid people have the dangerous habit if walking on the train tracks. They appear to enjoy it. Now don't come up with cock and bull stories saying that people have no foot path and they had no option but to walk on the rail tracks.

The video suggests that the accident happened at a station. Two points, one being that people do not generally walk on foot at stations like these and second is that there were many people around who would have warned the persons concerned. One should not draw conclusions until all the facts are established.

The land strips which are located very close to the railway tracks have been declared as the railway reservation. But unfortunately certain persons have encroached these strips and they are dwelling there erecting either permanent or temporary constructions. They use the railway track frequently for their daily needs. Such persons are more often falling prey to these types tragedies. Although the railway authorities have displayed the sign boards that the persons moving on the rail track are subjected to the prosecution it is very sad that nobody pays the attention to the sign boards Therefore such illegal occupants should be ejected subjected to the legal provisions and they should be ejected in order to mitigate or avert the tragic incidents like this
