Time to finally drop Dasun Shanaka?
Sri Lanka faces reality check after embarrassing defeat to India
Sri Lanka were absolutely embarrassed in front of a packed house at R. Premadasa Stadium by India, who clinched the Asia Cup without breaking a sweat yesterday.
Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka, for some reason, opted to bat first under cloudy conditions in the big final, only to be blown away for just 50 runs by an Indian pace attack led by Mohamed Siraj, who picked
up six wickets for 21 runs.
Crushing India loss a 'wake-up call', says Sri Lanka coach
Dimuth Karunaratne, who had been brought into the Sri Lanka squad to provide the team a solid start, was dropped midway through the Asia Cup after a couple of failures for more explosive Kusal Janith Perera.
While Karunaratne was axed after a few games, Shanaka has been a failure for months. His average in the last twenty odd matches has been less than five. He got another duck yesterday against Siraj and looked like a batsman who is absolutely clueless. Even Sri Lanka number ten Maheesh Theekshana has a better average than Shanaka in the given period.
In his pre-match press conference, Shanaka said that his captaincy is more important than his batting. It’s almost like he is accepting that he is a passenger on the team. He has got to be the only cricketer to
be able to remain in the team despite being an absolute failure for ages.
Shanaka, in every single press conference, seems to thank the selectors and the SLC.
Perhaps that’s what keeps him on the team. Chamika Karunaratne, who has had a good run in the ODI team, was unfairly dropped from the squad, making Shanaka the only fast bowling option in the team. Interestingly, Karunaratne has a better batting and bowling average than Shanaka in ODIs.
Angelo Mathews, after all his injuries, made a gallant comeback in the Lanka Premier League (LPL), but somehow he was barely considered for the World Cup, ensuring Shanaka’s spot in the team.
There is no doubt that Shanaka took over Sri Lanka at a very difficult stage, and Sri Lanka has made some improvements in recent times. But an international cricketer cannot be playing cricket with such horrible performances.
The entire team was at fault yesterday, however. The batting was dreadful, and no one was willing to take the responsibility and fight for the country. It was a huge disappointment for all Sri Lankan fans, who
had huge expectations. Many anticipated a close encounter between these two nations, but the game barely lasted 3 hours thanks to Sri Lanka’s subpar performance.
Perhaps it’s time Sri Lanka moved on from Shanaka before the country ends up being an absolute joke in the World Cup. (Harsha Amarasinghe)

The main culprit is SLC who increased the number of First Division Teams to 26 to get votes during SLC Elections thereby making domestic First Division Tournaments meaningless. Even school cricket teams in Australia are stronger than First Division Teams in Sri Lanka. So instead of picking Shanaka or any other players to apportion blame, put the entire blame on SLC. Dissolve SLC and hold fresh elections for Executives under a new Constitution. That is the only way to resurrect Sri Lankan cricket.

Pity Harsha amarasighe wasn't around till Sri Lanka won some 13 matches in a row under Dasun Shanaka and ended up as the second best team, while right throughout they were being blamed for something or other. Did anyone play exceptionally well yesterday to be made captain? No. Everyone was a failure.

If his capataincy matters then he can give advice by staying outside the boundry ropes. He can join the support staff in odi matches. We cannot have both Dananjaya and Dasun in odi matches at 6 and 7 as both have failed to score continuesly and fails in crusual matches.Check batting stats of both and you will see. Both are just ballers with bit of batting skills but not technically good. Also our batting department is very weak when it comes to technical side. SLC should get a good Aussie batting coach to correct technical issues. Players like Sahan Arachchige, Chamika and Ashen Bandara should be given a chance instead of irresponsible players like Dasun and Dananjaya in odi matches.

most of these wins came from the WC qualifier beating minows ,dont be so proud of it . just because of captaincy we cant afford to keep a under performing player .A captain should be able to take the responsibilty and hold the ship from sinking . yesterday if has stayed for 10-15 overs with mendis ,the game would have been different . same happend with Pak he simply threw the wicket .moreover he cant survive proper spin or pace beyond couple of overs

Yes it's very obvious Dasun Shanaka is not a captaincy material, very poor leadership and very irresponsible the way he plays at crucial situations in the game. He has his Godfathers in Selectors for sure,the way he goes on praising them,capable and experienced players are sitting out or nowhere in the scene. Dasun Shanaka had better days but lost his head on the way. Yesterday's match was embarrassing, and wonder if a Hidden hand was behind the scene fraudulently fixing the match??could be ??? With a uncredible SLC board,and the top officials anything is possible.

It increased the number of First Division Teams in Sri Lanka with population 22.0 million to 26 when India with 1400.0 million population only has 38 such teams. As a result, the level of Frist Division cricket in Sri Lanka is extremely low. No point in blaming cricketers for this debacle.

No captain of a cricket team can stay on when he is not performing with bat or ball. Only 11 players are allowed in a team. So no room for passengers, captain or not. With gloomy skies and just after a shower with humid air, you dont opt to bat as the ball will skid or swing or both. Batting side will be taking huge risks if they attempt to whack the ball in those conditions. So Dasun opting to bat is suicide, big time. As a rule, do not keep on players when they fail 3, 4 times in sequence. Dasun has failed more than 7 times.

If you look at international teams around the captain always deserves to be in the team for his performance before being considered for captaincy. Time to move on from Shanaka and appoint somebody whose performance is worth to be in the team.

The thing is not that Shanaka is the only batsman we have. It’s that he is best captain currently we have. He has won us the asia cup beating India and pak last year and again took us to Asia cup Final also this year. Just after one loss these boomer uncles pop up suddenly to criticize. And when we win they shamelessly praise the same players. But yes Dasun the batsman is badly out of form in Odi’s and inconsistent. We need a solution for this also. May be after World Cup we can rest him few matches and try a new captain. Till Dasun tune his batting back Only thing I can agree is Chamika Karunatarne. I am bemused why Sri Lankan supporters are irrate at their cricket teams performance at the Asia Cup. Didn't they watch the other matches the team played. They bearly managed to reach the finals through several teasingly close games. Now, they may have won those matches on their own or the poor performances of the opposition. We all know the answer. It was both Afghanistan and Pakistan loosing rather than SL winning. Remember it's not in this tournament but in general that had been the case with SL. If SL's cricketing standard is going down, I would place the blame entirely on ICC. ICC shold set minimum performance standards. If a team repeatedly performs below the required standard, irrespective of winning, the team should be relegated. Such team should reach the required standard again to be promoted to the top most level. Before commenting people should analyse the following. In the first game against Bangladesh did SL win or Bangladesh lose? Both teams played well but ultimately SL won. In the finals SL lost and India didn't win. Frankly no challange was posted by SL for india to compete and win. To put it differently at the end of SL innings even before india batter everyone knew what the results would be. So India cannot take credit for winning. Similarly SL cannot take credit for winning many recent games as most were lost by the opposition and not won by SL.

I’m not a cricket expert though I played some cricket at school. However I cannot prevent myself from making on point over Dasun Shanaka’s decision to bat first which many here and there find is one of major factor behind the Sunday’’s humiliating defeat of the SL team. As far as I know and heard of, the decision that whether bat first or field during the toss is just not a sole decision of the captain but a collective decision taken by the team and the coach plays a critical part of that decision making process (if this is not the case please correct me by an expert on this particular matter!). I mean that there must be many talks of what is going to do if the toss wins or loses behind the scene prior to the captains of both teams came to the ground for try to the toss. As far as I know neither the coach nor any relevant cricket authority said that Shanaka has arbitrarily taken that decision breaking their collective decision to bat first or field. Then why DS alone, not others?

As a Captain, Shanaka did not read the pitch properly, that the first half an hour of play would assist the seam bowlers. Had he opted to field, the finals would have lasted longer. Poor captaincy.. He always boast about his captaincy in order to hide his continuous failure as an all-rounder.. He should be replaced.. Having him in the team is an utter wastage, when there are so many talented players around waiting for selection.

I have been following Sri Lankan cricketers for a long time. I have seen many who captained the different teams Shanaka is not a batsman or a bowler. Having played 88 T20I his batting average is 20 and has taken 25 wickets. He is not a player who must be in the team. This is all politics in cricket

Just a suggestion - don't ponder much on this defeat. Your players have played superbly to reach the final. Just take it as a bad day and move on. Check if slc was involved in match fixing. This is something just came in to my mind. SLC may have asked players to allow IND win and then players did this to let the fans know they were forced to loose by slc. Instead of loosing with a fight they just gave up to let the world know slc was behind match fixing. Remember the main sponsor is also a scam betting company. Also at lpl lot of pyramid sponsors came too. Investigate guys

I'm reading some of the comments on here about how Dasun brought us out from our dark days of cricket which he did. So are we just going to keep him in the team for this reason? He does not score any runs, he cannot bowl, he's just a passenger. Just because he brought Sri Lanka cricket out of a very dark period that doesn't mean SLC owes Dasun anything. Cricket is a sport just like any other. If Dasun cannot compete, he should be dropped just like any other player would be. We owe him nothing!!!

So we had a badday on the office. Our boys will come back. Dasun is a good captain but as a player he has to take a calculated risk by opening the innings and playing freely. I think because of the captaincy pressure he is very nervous going at 7 or 8 because he has too much time to think and worry.

Amazed to see one's suggestion to appoint Kusal Mendis as the New captain of the national cricket team .He cannot bat against strong teams and history has proved that already.Therefore he is not the suitable candidate for the Captain's post.and his discipline is also not good. In summary the general consensus is that the current captain has to be rested. Dimuth Karunaratne will be a good option for captaincy for the WC in October, 2023. No point in blaming each and everybody now. Yesterday is gone. Look forward to the tomorrows. Make a prudent, viable and tangible decision now so that the players can get use to the new arrangement in time for the next big WC competitions. Let the players forget what happened in the Asia Cup. It is just another bad DREAM. If the players can improve their temperament, patience, play their natural game, then their performance will be enhanced. What we can do is to support them, encourage them, cheer them up at this most difficult and embarrassing time. There are good and bad days in sport, captaincy or leadership in cricket is not about scoring runs or taking wickets, it's the ability as a leader to bring the best out of the rest of the players and give them confidence to work on a winning formula. That's what Dasun Shanka does very well. Understand what great leadership is all about. Stop criticising a great team of young men who can be a great team going forward. You must fail to win thats where you learn. Winners never quit and quitters never win!

What a bunch of ungrateful idiots we have in SL. The man led the team to the finals. We were far from the best team. We beat teams such as Pakistan which are far better than us. We were in the finals because we punched way above our weight. And that is thanks to leadership. Yes, Shanaka has been failing and something has to be done. But this vitriolic, idiotic garbage written is unacceptable. It is because of people like these that SL can never become a great country. And I saw the SJP asking for an investigation, as if this was some match fixing case. The cricket team in SL is one of the handful of professional places in the whole country. The politicians shouldn't judge our cricket team by their own standards.

Sri Lanka are better chasing. Why did the captain opt to bat first is my question? India had the better team in all departments without a doubt. It is unfair to put the entire blame on one player but that one player can motivate the side. Something visibly wrong somewhere. Players should realise that they are representing an entire nation who back them unconditionally and felt utterly let down. Grow up into professionals otherwise quit without disgracing the hard work put in over the years.

Dasun is ten times the player of Angelo Mathews. Any persons supporting Angelo Mathews should be banned from coming to match grounds.
