Tragedy strikes as infant dies due to hospital refusal in Matara

Colombo, July 04 (Daily Mirror) -A 2-month-old baby died after choking on milk, reportedly because she was denied treatment at Matara District New Hospital in Kamburugamuwa.

The tragic event occurred on July 3, when the infant was denied entry to the Kamburugamuwa hospital’s emergency room.

The infant had been fed milk early that morning and soon developed complications. Subsequently, her parents rushed her to the Matara District New Hospital in a three-wheeler.

According to the parents, the hospital security personnel informed them that the emergency room was not operational and they could not accept the patient.

The parents pleaded to be allowed to take their child inside or to use an ambulance to transport her to another facility. However, their requests were reportedly denied.

Then the parents transported the infant to the Matara General Hospital, located approximately 10 kilometers away.

By the time they arrived, doctors at Matara General Hospital declared the baby dead, stating that her life could have been saved had she been brought in just 30 minutes earlier.

No don't blame the doctors or security officer, let's blame the parents for rushing the baby to the nearest hospital and baby for getting chocked.

Those at the top , what could they do? The decision to treat or not to treat was taken by those on site because the facility was not operational. Those at the top could investigate and bridge the gaps .

Who is responsible? The hospital authorities should be accountable for this. In the developed countries, the law is applied equitably and compensation can be sought for negligence!

OK. Now hold a big investigation and say it will not happen again. The child is lost for the parents. If it is a Hospital 24/7 a Doctor must be present. If the Doctor rostered was not present take disciplinary action against the doctor

If the Emergency room was not operational then you cannot admit patients, but if there were other Doctors on site then the Child should have been checked by one of them. Very selfish medical administrators. They just want their benefits taken care of.

Some of these so called hospitals in the outskirts do not have facilities for emergency cases. Do not blame these hospitals since once a patient is admitted the expectations of the loved ones are great and in the absence of emergency facilities sometimes the patient is on the balance and then there is a hue and cry if anything goes wrong the staff are to be blamed. The responsibility lies with the Health Ministry to ensure that all these hospitals in the outskirts are well equipped not only with Doctors but with the necessary equipment. Some of these hospitals due to the brain drain are running with a skeleton staff of doctors and nurses. So refrain from offering curses since 6,9 mn are to be blamed for creating this chaos in the country leading this country to bankruptcy as well as currently not addressing the grievances of employees which will further result in the deterioration in the services to the public who have to intone "Mea Culpa Mea Culpa Mea Maxima Culpa"!!!!!!

Hospital authorities should be held responsible. If necessary sudpend them for negligence. Health Minister should take immediate action to hold an inquiry and also arrange for a compensation for the negligence of the Hospital. Without wasting time in the parliament the Minister must visit the govt hospitals region wise and address the staff.

Most of the Hospital staff serving are coming from Narcotic Drugists family that lives mainly involving in illegal activities, they do not have real human qualities, that actually caused the infant to die. When staff are recruited to the health care units, a proper recruitment cardre should be followed up to employees. Those group of Under-World Gangs or Drugists should not be appointed to the responsible health care sections. Anyway, bring that rude security to the court and sack him from the post with severe prison sentence coupled with paying millions of compensation to the victim.
