Train derails near Watagoda station in Talawakelle

The Udarata Menike train travelling from Colombo Fort to Badulla derailed near the Watagoda station in Talawakelle today at 3.30 pm, the Nawalapitiya Railway Control Room said.

They said only the engine of the train was damaged in the incident.

An official from Watagoda railway station confirmed that the other railway line at the station is still operational, allowing trains to continue on that route without disruption.

The Control Office said the derailed engine of the train has been removed and is currently stationed at one of the platforms. Additionally, arrangements have been made to transport the passengers to their destinations in Badulla through a special train.

Railway control room officials have assured the public that all necessary measures are being taken to handle the derailed train engine and ensure the safety and efficiency of railway operations. (Ranjith Rajapaksa)
