Treasury settles full government payments for 2023

Colombo, Dec 29 (Daily Mirror) - The Treasury has disbursed funds to cover all government-approved payments till December 15, 2023, in accordance with the 2023 Budget.

According to the President's Media Division (PMD), this marks the first time in a quarter of a century that all payments have been successfully settled within a single calendar year.

Furthermore, the Treasury has committed to ensuring the prompt release of funds, encompassing any outstanding amounts, for the retirement gratuities of officers retiring up to December 19, 2023.

Wholly agree. We need to acknowledge the positives, rather than joing the herd being led by political activists on here to smear even positive developments for narrow political agendas. Something that did not happen in 25 years is happening today ... the government is stating to pay its bills on time. This will have a ripple effect especially on those suppliers who were cash stapped due to delayed settlement of dues will now get some breathing space. If it continues the prices quoted for their services will come down in furture as the impact of the delayed settlement factored into their bids come off.

Release of funds to pay retirement gratuties is commendable. However why is the government not trying to reduce the need to release large amounts of funds for this purpose in future. 51% of our tax revenue goes to pay government servants salaries and pensions. REDUCE THE BLOATED GOVERNMENT SERVICE.

If we continue with administrative and fiscal discipline direct and indirect tax rates could be brought down for sure. The IRD needs to get themselves into gear and collect what is due. How many current personal income tax files does the IRD have as yet. That would tell their tardiness or otherwise in administering the system. Heads will need to rol in there if they are not doing their job.
