Two arrested for blackmailing women with secretly recorded videos

Colombo, January 2 (Daily Mirror) - The Computer Crimes Investigation Branch of the CID in the North Central Province arrested two individuals involved in secretly videographing several women and attempting to demand sex bribes or threatening to share the videos online.

The main suspect, a 36-year-old resident of Mahagalkadawala and his accomplice, a 45-year-old from Ibbagamuwa, were arrested following an investigation triggered by a complaint from a 24-year-old woman.

The woman, employed at a business establishment in Thambuttegama, reported that the suspect had videographed her while she was travelling on a bus and had demanded Rs. 200,000 or an opportunity to sexually exploit her. The suspect had threatened to share the videos online if she did not comply.

The main suspect had used multiple SIM cards and memory cards registered under the identity of a manual labourer from Akuressa, who was unaware of the misuse.

The second suspect from Ibbagamuwa had stolen the labourer's identity card to acquire the SIM cards for the main suspect.

During the investigations, it was discovered that the suspect had taken compromising photos of several young women, including those from his neighborhood, his friends' fiancées, and women residing in hostels.

The main suspect exhibited unruly behaviour during questioning and attempted to destroy the memory cards containing the incriminating evidence.

Both suspects were produced before the Thambuttegama Magistrate and remanded till January 10.
