In line with the Clean Sri Lanka project, the Sri Lanka Police has launched two traffic initiatives aimed at reducing accidents and easing congestion.
The first initiative targets vehicles equipped with altered ringtones, flashing lights of various colors, illegal modifications, loud horns, noisy silencers and additional parts that increase accident risk.
The second initiative involves deploying plainclothes officers to identify traffic violations by public transport bus drivers and enforce the law accordingly.
Police said these operations will run as a pilot programme from January 4 to 19, with the goal of raising awareness among drivers and the public.
During the first operation, officers will primarily focus on educating drivers, issuing warnings and instructing them to remove any unauthorised modifications from their vehicles.
Police said they expect these initiatives to continue beyond the pilot phase, with plans to enforce laws related to vehicle modifications and further monitor public transport buses through undercover officers.

Start Impounding Vehicles To Inconvenience Speedsters Sunday, 05 January 2025 09:43 AM
Start vehicle impounding and keep them for a few days once the operation goes into full force after 19th onwards. Also include fines and jail terms for repeat offenders too. Once the vehicle operators or owners are inconvenienced, common sense should prevail. Most accidents occur due to speeding either to save some time or to show off. By impounding their vehicles, most will think twice on the consequences of their selfish actions!

Many times police has done this awareness programs. Anyone, who get a driving licence is supposed to know the road rules. Stop wasting time, start implementing the law to the letter, period.

Deploying undercover officers to identify dangerously over speeding bus drivers is the best move by this project. I would also recommend to take steps for educating citizens about road rules and importance of safety from school.

excellent move ! Driver's dicipline ,Respect and been responsible for others are much needed to the country's savings / equally earnings , noise pollution is crazy down here , the horns /head lights ( those are not originallly design ) additional decorations must be banned with an immediate effect . Road safety begins here, Bus drivers and Threeweel drivers/ motor bikes think they rule srilankan roads and its law, as they say Law should apply to top class but not to them .Lol ,on the other hand it should be a decent service to the public with freedom to choose , it's not that threewheeler junction choice ( Rowdies / thugs ) there are good individuals among those communities

CORRUPTION HAS NOT BEEN ONLY IN THE PREVIOUS GOVTS, BUT IN THE STOOGES THEY USED TO HELP OUT FAMILY, EXTENDED FAMILY, FRIENDS AND STOOGES WHO THEY USED TO CARRY OUT THEIR BUILDING OF ASSETS THROUGH CO Sunday, 05 January 2025 03:39 PM
ANOTHER NEGATIVE COMMENT, REMEMBER THE CORRUPT GOVT HAS BEEN WIPED OUT OF POLITICS AND WE HAVE A GOVT THAT IS DEDICATED TO NOT ONLY TAKE THE COUNTRY AND ITS PEOPLE FORWARD BUT AS MENTIONED IN THEIR MANIFESTO CORRUPTION TOO. IF ANY POLICE OFFICER IS CAUGHT ACCEPTING A BRIBE HE SHOULD BE BROUGHT BEFORE A COURT OF LAW AND IF FOUND GUILTY, HE IS OBVIOUSLY NOT FIT TO BE IN THE POLICE SERVICE, SAME GOES FOR ARMED FORCES TOO.

There are many busses including CTB omit smoke and they pass police stations and checkpoints, no one cares. This should be stopped and necessary action should be taken. No plastic can be taken to beaches and common touristic and religions places Dumping garbage should be stopped and charged People living close to canals should be charged for throwing garbage to the waters Enough of awareness, apply rule, this s how we can clean Sri Lanka

Discipline the big vehicles and police vehicles and set an example to the others. Also regularly check whether vehicles stop at pedestrian crossings, specially where there are no lights. There is no point in having them if vehicles do not stop. It is also important to have all the lights working at pedestrian crossings with lights.

It is very important to educate all the drivers to stick with the speed limit and I am always sick with slow drivers as if everyone drives with the same speed and not require to overtake will lead in reduction in the accidents

Impounding the vehicle for a few days is the best way of driving home safety points. Everyone loves their vehicle, and taking them away for a few days is like taking away a toy from a kid. They will feel it, and the next time warn them that they will lose it for a whole month, 3-month, year or two years. It will drive the message home sooner or later.

We need to tackle the root cause which is the suppliers - spare parts and modification shops that are allowed to sell these equipment. Need to start there if you want to eradicate this permanently because going after the consumer doesn't ensure that the halt of inflow of such equipment to the public.
0 4
Stop the consumer Sunday, 05 January 2025 10:36 PM
When the consumer is stopped from using it, automatically the supplier cannot sell and the inflow will stop. As long as there is a demand for all this stuff suppliers will keep importing.

Buses never stop in the dent at bus halts. They park on the road lane to prevent others overtaking. Policeman closeby just turn a blind eye. See near Dehiwala junction obstructing High Street traffic. This leads to frustration and then accidents. Very funnily, in front of Mount Lavinia Police, there are 2 pedestrian crossings within 120 meters but everyone including policemen/ women cross between those 2.

Poor taste shows the uneducated mind Sunday, 05 January 2025 07:24 PM
A vehicle comes from the manufacturer with whatever the parts they need. All these people who are whining about the removal of additional parts and decorative items should be educated about the importance of safety of a vehicle. Traffic police must have an awareness program with videos and films periodically for the drivers and owners to give a clear picture of how a public transport fleet should be operated without making them look like "thorombal karaththa"

Joshua, entirely agree with your views. If I may add one more, that will be for these morons to use their loud horns in a wanton fashion. One is made to wonder if horns drive the vehicle. Law should be enacted to help ensure limit on 'decibel rating' of horns to be used in city centers.

Pre-1985 Vehicles are NOT required to pass Emission Test to enew revenue licence. There are Motor Enthusiats using old vehicles. Many of these do not have blinker flasher signals, fog lights, rear brake lights at the height where it is easlily visible to the driver behind. These enthusiasts fix additional lights so that is easier to drive in today's traffic. In the bygone there wre hand signals which today's younger generation is not aware of. Owing to the aforesaid circumstances, these additional accessories Rule should apply ONLY to Vehicles Manufactured / Registered in Sri Lanka post [after] 1985. That means this Additional Accessories Rule should NOT apply to ALL vehicles older than 40 years. Doesn't it sound sensible?

Motorway said to has been in operation for well over a decade yet some drivers do not know proper overtaking including correct signalling, driving to conditions (including wet weather), reaction and stopping times, not to mention those vehicles do not maintain rear lights, brake lights, using head lights impairing the vision of drivers on opposite lane etc etc. Therefore an education programme is warranted on media to educate the drivers on proper driving. Vehicles not maintained including lights that pose a threat and serious risk to other drivers should be heavily penalised.

The best way to go about this is by educating first the officers as they are just not bothered. Then put them on the road to patrol and fine the law breakers. The road lights, the street lines, the road signs and others should be made visible. More pedestrian crossings and speed bumps would address pedestrians to a stricter road usage.

Please do something about the buses. Just south of Bentota I witnessed one blue bus overtaking another blue bus on the railway crossing, which is on a corner totally illegal and extremely dangerous. On another occasion near Negombo, I saw a school bus full of children overtake another vehicle on a double line on a blind corner. What impression do the children get from that dangerous manouever?

First, the Drivers for the so called VIPs, must stop dominate other road users. Dont speed and drive behind me demanding me to give a road. I am not going do that! Secondly, the ”police” light usage on front of the vehicle must be punnished. Persons with very limited brain capacity want mislead other road users by creating their importance with these fake lights. Thirdly, if you dont know how to drive on highways, dont enter the highway. You are setting others into danger.

There should be a law that all Buses, Trucks and Three Wheels should have speed control units installed in their vehicles. This will block speeding of these vehicles where most of the accidents have occured.
