Colombo, April 16 (Daily Mirror)- Stressing that it is time to forget party politics, the United National Party (UNP) today invited all political parties to join hands to create a stable nation.
“What we are thinking of is a joint effort which goes beyond party politics. Therefore we invite all political parties to join hands to achieve the common goal of making Sri Lanka a stable nation,” UNP General Secretary Palitha Range Bandara said.
He said this in response to a question raised by journalists whether the UNP will welcome SLFP members to join hands, now that the latter is facing a crisis.
“We don’t care who will join us as long as they are ready to join hands for the sake of the nation,” he added.
The UNP General Secretary made a specific invitation to all MPs in the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) who are at loggerheads with their party leader to join the UNP.
Accordingly he invited Harsha de Silva, Eran Wickramaratne, Kabir Hashim and Thalatha Athukorala to join the UNP.
“We are inviting these MPs as we see they are at loggerheads with the SJB leadership and are being sidelined,” he said.
Also he urged the SJB and the National People’s Power (NPP) to stop their current drama over debates.
“There is no use in debating on the economy as far as the SJB and the NPP are concerned as they both declined the offers to take over the government during the crisis,” Range Bandara said.
He said both parties should have had their debates in 2022 when the nation was facing the economic crisis.

Never Ever Vote for These Morons Again Tuesday, 16 April 2024 08:56 PM
Exactly. Never ever vote for anyone who had a chance previously in government to correct and revamp the system. Most were involved in corrupt and criminal activities and some are still practicing it. If these morons are voted in again, the agony and misery of the citizens will continue and these idiots will continue living the lavish and luxurious lifestyle moving about in their V8s. The citizens will continue traveling in those rattling, rusting and hot buses and trains.

It is not a matter of backing a horse you think who is going to win. It is a matter between a man capable of taking us out of woods

It shall not happen. The UNP is not a force to reckon with. That's why local government elections not held. Even the Presidential election, too will not be held by Ranil Rajapakshas'.

UNP ìs a total failure due to RW and his dirty tactics. He never developed a single other leader to take over. Capable leaders such as Lalith Gamini got murdered, Ruwan is not properly groomed and empowered and Sajith was bull shifted to a point of no return. Now asking SJB to join hands is a joke though in principle the concept of all parties joining hands to revive the country is correct. Leadership for such an initiative should come from a credible economically savvy 3rd party which should be non political. As a political leader fir the country RW is good (perhaps the best for the next 3 years) but he lost respect due to too much cumningness in his political survival game.

Since UNP had no business in politics they gave us weekly updates saying that those from SJB will join the UNP in months then weeks and finally in days. Now since nothing worked out they're begging in otherwords 'stressing' as for the need of the country that political parties unite to create a stable nation. As a fact if they keep on continuing these stunts, them scrapping through an election would be a miracle

Sir I am impartial in Politics. Why should SJB join UNP since they are the Opposition Party to the Govt.with 46 MPs.? I cannot understand your call after you are not even a Member of Parliament. Is it you want SJB to join UNP and win some seats in General Election on Votes and you want to Enter Parliament?

You are all correct. Let us bring Thummulle Wimalaya as the next president. Any objection? Then let us bring Ranaweera of Kelaniya. Recently he was awarded a Ph.D. by the Kelaniya University.

@Tom; Ranil was never cleared by a court since a case is not properly filed as investigations disrupted for their survival, either by Ranil or Rajapakshas' due to their friendship. Commissions are not as significant as cannot able to impose punishment.

Time has come for srilankan's to elect a new leadership to the country ignoring old set of politicians, and move forward with a new President , as srilankan's we have think out of the box to develop our country on our own strengths, selling national wealth, borrowing without any limitations and asking for help from IMF alone is not going to resolve our problems we have to do something extraordinary, which is not possible with UNP / SLPP members and supporters joining together because the same corruption is going to continue.

People have no respect to the President, he destroyed his own party UNP and this was because he wanted to handover party to Ruwan, all capable UNP supporters left the party due to frustration, and Rajapakses took the advantage of this situation but Rajapakses ruined the country but opposition was too weak to challenge the Rajapakse regime, so Ranil is responsible for the current situation of the country.
